Look, Mass-Shooters Stimulate The Economy!

Now I've heard all the stupid I can stand.

NEWTOWN, Conn. – Talk about Sandy Hook Elementary School is turning from last month's massacre to the future, with differing opinions on whether students and staff should ever return to the building where a gunman killed 20 first-graders and six educators.

Some Newtown residents say the school should be demolished and a memorial built on the property in honor of the victims killed Dec. 14. Others believe the school should be renovated and the areas where the killings occurred removed, like Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., after the 1999 mass shooting.

So now if some nutjob decides to commit homicide we now turn the place where it happens into a parking lot and send the bill to the taxpayers?

There's dumb and then there's idiotic.  In the private sector you might choose to do such a thing, but it's your money.  In this case the money was already spent and now these people propose to spend it again, by force.

The irony of the government sticking a gun up the nose of everyone who lives in Sandy Hook to force them to pay for demolition (and the replacement school for said kids) is not lost on me, but I bet it is lost on those who think there's this invisible "money tree" from which all such projects come.

This sort of fantasy-land unicorn garbage*****es me off.  A madman committed a crime.  There is not even a point in gathering evidence, as the person who you would prosecute is dead, having taken his own life.

If the government is telling us the truth, that there was one shooter and nobody else, then the damage this clown caused should be repaired, security fixed (next time don't be a jackass and put wired glass in the windows near the door you intend to buzz people through) then use the facility you already forced the residents to pay for.

It's a building, not a person.

As for those who are advocating demolition, let them pay for both it and the replacement facility, in full and in advance, or shut the hell up.

Grow up people.

When presented with the choice between showing strength or weakness in the face of tragedies, Americans nearly always choose the latter. The best way thing to do would be nothing at all and to carry on as best as is possible as if it had not happened.

I'm sure a loan is still outstanding for the building of that school. The "leverage" generation never paid for anything in cash and has a habit of just rolling debt over in perptuity especially in public education.

I was also disgusted when I heard this floated on msm last week. 'The people' have turned into a bunch of woosies. Oh they say 'the children and teachers can't go back to the place where this occurred.'
We all have to face mortality and the fact there a sickos out there;
deal with it and face it, don't run.
People stop driving on the interstate where mass pileup kills 20 ?
Nobody going to occupy or patronize the new skyscraper at wtc site ?
logic eludes the masses.

What is America's fascination with memorials? Seems like everytime there's a tragedy where more than 3 people die there's demands for a memorial, usually taxpayer funded too. What's wrong with putting a brass plaque up on the school with the vicitm's names and call it a day? Raze the school and make the entire site a memorial seems like a waste of real estate, even if it were privately funded. Not to be callous but 50 years from now nobody is going to remember Sandy Hook. I recall all the screams after 9/11 that the entire WTC site couldn't be redeveloped and had to be a memorial. My opinion was we should build right on the same footprints - just taller - as a big **** you to Bin Laden and co.

Well for the short term, they need the school to try to figure out what happened

Is it any surprise they feel there is a cloak of shame and guilt on the building itself? These are people who see the gun as guilty.
I've known people who won't buy a house in which somebody died, not of murder, but cancer or old age.
People who transfer human qualities to objects or animals do all sorts of strange things. Some will not get rid of a loved ones belongings after they die. Their room becomes a time capsule memorial. very strange pet owners have their dead pet freeze dried and varnished.
Here in Michigan when somebody is killed in an auto accident the family comes out and maintains a memorial on site. It can be very dangerous when it is on a busy freeway.
People are frigging nuts.

Memorials... Some of us love them more than others.

On behalf of a leading animal rights group, an Irvine woman is asking the city to erect a memorial at the street corner where 1,600 pounds of live fish died this month when a container truck was involved in a three-vehicle crash.

Pardon my callousness, but why are they wasting time trying to re-create the scene. Lanza shot and killed 26 people, killed himself, case closed. Move on and get back to normal.

Unless of course black helicopters were spotted in the area but then the "true" story will never get out anyhow....../sarc

One other thought. Removing the area where the shootings occurred? Yeah, that won't serve as a reminder that there people killed there.

This extends past tax payers. That movie theater in Colorado is catching flack for reopening and inviting the families of the victims. Some could say that this was in bad taste. But they did talk to some of the families beforehand. The corporation must of had an indictation that some wanted the invitation. However, others opted to go to the MSM and complain. Can't satisfy everyone. I just want to know if they will still have the gun-free zone pictures up when they reopen.

A bigwig on the local school board district probably has a buddy or relative at a local construction company and has already promised him the job.

'Never let a crisis go to waste' not only applies to DC.

It's only taxmoney. If there's still some left, grab some.

Seems to me that true pride and leadership would be to clean up and carry-on simply as a way to respect those that lost their lives there and to remember so it doesn't happen again.

The problem with changing things is that it's a constant memorial to the shooter. That's all we need is more nut jobs seeing that they will be memorialized after the blow their brains out at the end of their tirade. Ludicrous!

Nice call on RIMM by the way...
