Oh this isn't so good...

In the week ending January 5, the advance figure for  seasonally adjusted initial claims was 371,000, an increase of 4,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 367,000. The 4-week moving average was 365,750, an increase of 6,750 from the previous week's revised average of 359,000.

Remember, this is a short week as well!  But don't look under the hood:

The advance number of actual initial claims under state programs, unadjusted, totaled 552,043 in the week ending January 5, an increase of 61,944 from the previous week. There were 646,219 initial claims in the comparable week in 2012.

In a short week.  smiley

The big table shows a major roll-off from EUC 2008, which has been in process now for the last year.  But the news here is that while this is accelerating, the "Regular" (26 week initial) number moved sharply higher.  And the big table is not a short week.

For commentary, I can't improve on this summary from ZH:

Tyler Durden wrote..
Overall a report that confirms that 6 years after the start of the Depression, propped by some $15 trillion in central bank reserve liquidity injections the bulk of which has been used to prop stock markets, there is still no actual improvement in the economy.

As you've pointed-out for years KD, there simply cannot, and will not, be any material improvement in the state of the economy until the infections that caused the depression (huge piles of backed-by-wishing-and-fantasy-and-fraud debt emission) in the first place are forced out into the sunlight, recognized, and dealt with the way they should be - bankruptcy.

TPTB seem to be willing, to this point, to do literally anything to keep that from happening - and I rhetorically, and with malice aforethought, ask, "Why?"

I think of the damage they've done to the concept of "equal justice" and the rule of law in attempting to hide the TBTF insolvencies and I don't see us getting healthy without repairing that... no matter how many BK's are allowed to happen.

Hell, I dunno that it's even repairable.

I'm one of those new claims.

Dec 31st corporate showed up mid-day, said "this store is closed, everyone pack your tools and go home". No warning at all.

Thanks, Killersdad

They keep talking about drafting a Constitution for Iraq ...why don't we just give them ours? It was written by a lot of really smart guys, it has worked for over 200 years, and we're not using it anymore.
