Yep. Book cookin'. If a private business cooked it's book in such a fashion the IRS would be all over them like stink on crap.

Very interesting. Until now, I've never heard anyone explain why these tax and spending bills have expiration dates and admittedly, I never thought anything of it. This explanation makes absolute sense. Thank you for pointing this out. Another piece of knowledge to debate the deniers with.

One of the more distressing moments of my voting life came when I realized that the party of "small government" was but a hoax. Republicans, like their Democratic step-brother, are in the business of exapnding the power and reach of the federal government. Disagreement exists only at the margins. After all, Justice Scalia, the poster child of a conservative and originalist judiciary, believes there should be some limits to the 2nd Amendment. He can be counted on then to be part of the consensus to limit our rights.

How's that cuttin' FedGov workin out there? LOL. Quote:Obama Orders Pay Raise for Biden, Members of Congress, Federal Workers EO to end the pay freeze, 'cause the rulers aren't skimmin' enough from the serfs. Quote:President Barack Obama issued an executive order to end the pay freeze on federal employees, in effect giving some federal workers a raise. One federal worker now to receive a pay increase is Vice President Joe Biden.
According to disclosure forms, Biden made a cool $225,521 last year. After the pay increase, he'll now make $231,900 per year.
Members of Congress, from the House and Senate, also will receive a little bump, as their annual salary will go from $174,000 to 174,900. Leadership in Congress, including the speaker of the House, will likewise get an increase.
Here's the list of new wages, as attached to President Obama's executive order:
"A new executive order has been issued providing for a new pay schedule beginning 'on the first day of the first applicable pay period beginning after March 27, 2013,'" reports FedSmith.com. "The pay raise will generally be about 1/2 of 1%." http://www.weeklystandard.com/blogs/obam....Hmmm, see a pattern here? Guns for me but not for you. Pay raises for me but not for you. Health care for me but not for you.

We have arrived at the fork in the road. And it's been decided by the oligarchs to take the low one. From here on in the SCOTUS won't give us any new rights. They'll just slowly take the ones that we have away. SLOWLY is the key word here. Like SLOWLY turning the burner up to cook the little frog in the pot. SLOWLY.
And as they do it the implication will be that we should be happy with the bones that they left behind that we can knaw on. ;^)

Once again I say give Obama the $250k and over tax increase. And when doing so I would emphasize that Obama was brought back because of this. We don't necessarily agree but that's what the people want.
But also the people gave the House Republicans a mandate to control spending. I would hold firm on the debt ceiling until Reid and Obama bring spending down from current levels. No more of this bull**** cut from baseline spending increases. Actual cuts. And I wouldn't budge until they bring in a budget.
Till I see these guys cut spending YOY I'll agree that they are all frauds. And I'm not sure where you get your number of 536. I guess you're giving Biden a pass.

"Neither. Republicans want to take my money and give it to Big Business. Democrats want to take my money and give it to everyone else."

Quote:Why were the Bush "tax cuts" set to expire? Why are the other "tax cuts" such as the Payroll tax cut automatically set to expire? The main reason the Bush Tax/payroll tax cuts are expiring is because they were passed under special rules called "reconciliation" which do not allow filibusters. If they had both passed with filibuster proof majorities they would have been permanent.

Its even worse. If the taxes actually do go up as the CBO's numbers include in their calculations, they wouldn't even come close to collecting as much as they say they will because people will change their behavior. It is fraud from top to bottom. Not a single one of the criminals will tell the public the truth either.

This is my opinion. Without doubt the pols in DC (all of them) know the gravity of the nation's fiscal dilemma. And they KNOW unless something it done to stop it that we are in a WORLD OF HURT - in the mid term (not that far off).
Had they wanted to kick the can down the road and continue doing the same - at the risk of blowing up the economy (and possibly the political system)they could've easily done it - just like they did it many times in the past. But this time seems different. hmmmm?
I think they are floating the canary in the mineshaft to gauge public reaction. They want to know if they can screw millions of people can get away with it. If there's too much heat, they can always go back to the bargaining table and quickly negotiate a deal. In the meantime, they will observe and either react appropriately or if there is little pushback - allow the fiscal cliff provisions to stand. They want to see where most of the pressure will come from. And they won't be able to know until the wheels are set into motion. You can't gauge this kind of stuff in a think tank prior to the fact. It's would all be theory. And theory is sometimes a far cry from reality.
That's what I think.

Karl wrote..If I had pulled that crap when I ran my company I would still be in pound-me-in-the-ass prison. Geez, Karl - get with the program. Just form your own government, and hire a bunch of bullyboy gunthugs with automatic weapons, armored vehicles & other assorted military toys. Then you can do whatever the heck you want. Works for Corzine and the rest of the DC crew... Oops! Almost forgot! You'll also need to create your own ass-licking major media, to make sure your "message" gets out. Their pay is kind of steep, though, and they'll want to live in the tonier sections of the DC area, so they can hang out and breed with the David Gregorys, Soledad O'Blyins and Katie Courics of the media world.

The politicians are just carrying out orders. It's the voters who are the real criminals, demanding the arithmetically impossible. How would a politician do if he/she ran mostly on "repeal EMTALA"? They'd go down in flames for being a meany.

Spending and tax bills originate in the House, according to the Constitution. A dollar doesn't get spent until Lyin' Ryan, Boner, and the House sign off on it. They can balance the existing spending right now by refusing to raise the debt limit. They can also do it with a budget or appropriations bills. If the Senate votes it down or Obongo vetoes it, fine. Let the government shut down. Play the game of chicken before there is no more chick to play because the country has collapsed.

I agree the voters are complicit but I don't think that believing our leaders' lies necessarily constitutes a "mandate".. How are voters supposed to make an informed decision when politicians lie around the clock and the "news" media does little more than repeat and discuss those lies? We may get the government we deserve, but allowing the media to spoon-feed us our political beliefs through a TV screen is the reason we deserve such a crappy government in the first place..
