Meanwhile, The Spanish Lies Are Being Exposed

As our futures bleed this morning on the hangover from yesterday's rumor dujour on the "fiscal cliff" buried below the fold and therefore invisible to Americanus Stupidus is the news that both Bankia and Valencia, along with a handful of other Spanish banking names, are collapsing.

Bankia was formed from a merger of provincial savings banks, drawing in over a quarter of a million small investors with extremely aggressive marketing.  Unfortunately it appears that they were also hiding losses and it was recently revealed that the firm had negative equity (that is, its assets are worth less than its deposits.)

Last May, if you recall, the firm was "nationalized" but the patina of normalcy was maintained for a while, with some fools continuing to believe they would somehow maintain their investment.  That now looks to be a farce as the recapitalization of the bank will effectively destroy the value of the firm's stock and leave investors with what amounts to nothing.

This leads one to wonder if the original listing on the Madrid exchange was basically a sham operation; it's not exactly as if the firm made all these loans in the 18 months since it was listed in July of 2011!

But heh, remember that we're all being told that the global economy will be ok, we've just got to get through this fiscal cliff problem and then Europe and the United States will return to strong growth!

It's all [bull****]. This entire so called "Recovery" is based on LIES. Each lie beckoning the masses as they get more and more desperate. I've lost all hope for any truth telling. The looting will just continue until there is nothing left...

Bankia was a particularly-nasty scheme in that it was only listed in 2011!

I seem to remember that during the great depression of the 1930's housing prices declined by 80%. Japan's downturn in the last 20 years had over an 80% decline in prices.

In some areas of the US housing prices bubbled up again. Especially surrounding Chicago.

I always assumed that Bankia was the Spanish 'bad bank' where they put all the especially nasty stuff that the other banks didn't want.

I was watching a very good documentary on Spain.

Spain is like China. Local governments are setup and incentivised to lend lend lend and take on debt. In Spain each region had its own bank just for that region unlike China's national SOE Big 6. each region set up to balance the 2 independence seeking regions and give them autonomy, rooted in Franco's Years. This caused all the problems with leverage and people buy homes they could not afford, the regional banks marketed RRE to Britons and others, The City traunched and sold the paper as AAAA and know you know the rest of the story.

Knew a teacher here last year, 3 languages, 2 Masters degrees, hottie, 27, could not handle the Culture Shock and China and returned to Spain with 60% UE for her age cohort.

I and another tried to talk her into going to the ME, earning $6k USD per month teaching at women's only universities. She had TWO MASTERS could subject teach, not English, work IB or International Schools anywhere on this planet. She would not do it, would rather be back home in an imploding society.

Spoke with a relative last night, USA bad, getting worse, they said: "You probably have a better future there than here."

I think they've managed to barely keep it propped up by
1. artifically restricting supply (NOT foreclosing and by maintaining a massive shadow inventory),
2. ZIRP (the moment rates tick up, home prices immediately sink) and
3. QE 4-ever (promising to buy $40B a month in in mortgage backed securities - giving banks a mechanism to offload garbage loans that I believe they'll continue to write).

Long term, I think we still need to ask ourselves WHO are the home buyers moving forward?? The unemployed/underemployed??? The youngsters graduating with RECORD debt which blows their debt to income even when they are finding work??? Boomers, who are retiring at 10k/day who are looking to downsize????

There will be pockets around the nation, I guess, where home prices are sustained.. TX maybe? But long-term this McMansion bubblicious **** is coming back to earth.

Was looking at Zillow yesterday for the Ft. Collins CO area, still LMAO at the prices.. We're not even close to bottom.

"Americanus Stupidus" - ROFLMAO.

I have visions of Steve Irwin tracking these not so wily beasts that survive by eating the stronger members of the herd. That would make a great movie or website name.

The only reason to stay in equities is if you don't want to take the capital gains hit or you are doing short time trading. The fix has been in for a decade.
