Fine, after the re-set it would be nice to have consequences for him and others who are liable.

Later on in the Nuremberg Trial for Financial Genocide hold this statement by Geithner in evidence. Any Ivy League attendance adds 10 years to the confinement period, since you should have known otherwise, and if you had some responsibility with a PhD in economics, the key gets thrown away.

I missed the radio show. How long does it take so you can listen on blogtalk radio afterwards? Thanks. Can that, it's there.

There are so many people I would love to see trying to run a real business. Gather up all them technocrats and union stooges, let them try right here in LA. With money out of their pockets. They would go postal in six months.

Oh you have to be actually good at something before you open the doors.
Real businesses make a profit.

Yeah I've realized that most people who hate businesses and want to tax/regulate the hell out of them don't know anyone who owns a business/never ran one themselves.

They don't understand anything.

Just like the folks who want to put every drug addict in prison... when really these people need help, not prison time... they never had a friend/relative who ended up addicted because that's just how their personality works...

Ignorance runs the world.

Hostess-will it be the great mediation followed by nationalization? Will Obama cram down one of his biggest fans (Ripplewood) or give Hostess a loan guaranteed? Will Hostess Inc will be deemed vital to the healthcare industry? Of course if Hostess is nationalized they have to make healthy fruitpies and ding dongs. This one could swing a million different ways, where the hell is the Warren Harding.

Karl mentioned something about respecting capital structure on the talk show, good timing Karl.

BTW- Real business owner here too, about the hardest thing to successfully accomplish on the planet. I disagree with Karl on the public company execs, some are good and some are complete phonies. Remember the GM execs never fixed the labor issue, they kicked the can and borrowed enough money to bankrupt themselves.

Enjoyed your presentation about middle management, which I've managed to belong to for the last 25 years (with a respectable salary). Spent 8 hours working on project schedules and PowerPoints for a major Aerospace & Defense customer last weekend, am on vacation at home this week, but still connected and dealing with work issues. Went on two three day daughter-related trips this year, always connected; thank goodness I only need to work for several more years (hope I'll be OK). Kudos for the daughter trip.

Karl, your story of starting and running a business is pretty much the same as anyone else starting and running a business. Employees clock out and you spend the next couple hours doing payroll and accounting and making work schedules for the next day.

The only difference I disagree in what you said is that you only had a couple of bosses (your minority partners). Yet your customers are now in a way your bosses and decide whether or not your company is fired or still has a job. Your job is to make sure non of your employees operate in a manner which causes your company to be fired and retain employment so your employees can still have a job next week.

Karl you are absolutely right - you want an easy life, go work for a paycheck and leave it all at the door when you clock out - I wanted more and have paid a considerable price but would not change a thing! I will never work for a paycheck again God willing.

You really have to have a go at Squeezy the Pension Python, Illinois' latest attempt at finance for the Playskool set.

Family from the Chicago burbs (teachers social workers) think this initiative is just great. Since teachers are an investment in the future we're so lucky they can retire at 55 and devote time to solving the tax revenue problem.

Much to be thankful for, now that I moved away from there.

Karl as usual a great post. I like you three categories of labor, mid management, and top management. However, I've always made a distinction that you didn't make and I'd like your take on it. I've always had a 3a and 3b. 3a, you built up the company, own it or a large portion of it, and sink or swim with it. 3b, and this is probably hostess, you are top management that work your way up various corporate ladders (always getting paid even if you got downsized along the way), but now you are at the top. Why do the guys in 3b deserve a big payout if they fail? I include not getting the union to come around in the fail category because as management you knew you had a union to deal with and you were not able to make a deal no matter what that deal was. (I make no claims of being pro or anti union here.) I also don't mind the big payday if top management is successful, I just don't like the idea of big paydays for the guys in 3b when they fail.

Continuing on so that you know how I'm thinking on this, I put you and Bill Gates in 3a, but most top management in 3b.

I'd love to read your take,

Flap

The money being paid here is not all that crazy, and you need some sort of incentive or these people walk -- there's a high probability of failure here.

The board's job is to determine if the current management is the right group or if you would have to find someone else.

As an example people asked about whether I'd shut up and go FIX RIMM a year or so ago. Sure -- I would -- but there'd be a price. A reasonably-decent salary (after all I HATE snow, and moving to Waterloo isn't exactly my idea of a good time) would surely be part of the mix, along with incentives for success. But you'd have to pay me pretty well to do it simply because the odds of success are rather poor, and as a consequence just getting me in the door is your first challenge.

Good reply. I guess I'm stuck on the "bonus" part of the compensation while in BK. I don't mind bringing in top management and telling them that you get X to try and turn the company around and, if you are successful then you also get Y. I just am having trouble with the extra money in BK.

Now, if that "bonus" is really just a part of X, and maybe shouldn't even be called a bonus then I have no problem. I just hate the idea that a company might be rewarding top management for a failure.

Running a real company blows. I don't hold ultimate responsibility where I work, but I've been asked to help many times from those who do.

Unions and the peanut gallery are financially illiterate and only see mega-executives that practically get millions for declaring they had no idea they were running the company into the ground.

Trying to build something from scratch is ****ing hard. Especially when it is all on you. Unless you really believe Obama's bull**** on "Someone helped you"
