The Little Things Count Too

So I've had a few questions as to where I "disappeared" to Friday and Saturday.

The short answer: I went to DC.

The slightly-longer answer: I went to "MOVE DC", the Kony 2012 conference, march and dance party.

The somewhat-longer answer: I played bus for three teens, including my daughter who's idea it was to do this, so she and two of her friends (a third had to bail at the last minute) could go march for a cause they believe in.

There are, in my estimation, no "good guys" when it comes to the crap going on in Uganda and surrounding nations.  But there is never an excuse for turning kids into soldiers or sexually exploiting them.  Never.  And every step anyone can and does take to move the ball forward on putting a stop to that crap, no matter how small, is a good step.

Sometimes it's not about the big things.  Sometimes it's all about the smaller things we do. It's about driving 30 hours over two days, poking up for the fuel such as it is, hauling a handful of teens to do something they believe in with them bucking up for the splits on a hotel room Friday night and their own food during those two days.  It's about sore feet but feeling good.  I'm home now, having woken up Saturday morning at 7:00 AM, and other than three one-hour catnaps in the car have been up and going since.  Don't expect much from me before noon tomorrow, as once I post this I'm going to make love to my pillow without saying a damn word for a good long time.

I got a metric ****load of video footage, some decent, a lot of it bad, and a few good still shots.  That's how it usually is.  My kid wanted the footage for her high school TV production and it's all hers.  She's filled her storage she had with her to capacity and I kept shooting; I've not seen hers -- or all of mine -- as of yet.

This is just one small segment of what I shot last night.  No steadycam folks, hand-held and it was a rough environment for it. I didn't dare bring anything big or bulky (like a nice mic setup) as I had no way to shield any of it and earlier was in the "mosh" with crowd-surfing going on -- if I had a shoulder rig on it would have gotten trashed.

Folks, it's not just about economics, and you don't always win.  I've been writing Tickers since early 2007, been to The Hill a few times, speak from time to time here and there and work on campaigns and other political events when I believe in them.

But sometimes, life and moving the ball forward is just about doing a little something extraordinary, and within your means, just because you can and because the cause is decent and either you someone you care about has passion for what they believe in.

I did a little bit of that this weekend, and while I'm damn tired, this evening I'm also satisfied.

Go make a difference, no matter how small.

Good on ya Karl - your daughter will always remember you did this for her. Parents don't get many of those "make a difference" opportunities during the brief time we have them when they are at this stage before they go off to college and start their lives.

Sweet! A new generation of kids who are going to learn that they can't sit around and wait for government to answer their problems. Make a difference.

Lucky kid you've got.

In the long run even the most despotic governments with all their brutality and cruelty are no match for ideas. Eventually the ideology that has won the support of the majority will prevail and cut the ground from under the tyrant's feet and rise in rebellion to overthrow their masters.

I'm jealous, actually.

When I was a mid teen, I remember being very interested in what was going on in the broader world around me. VN, civil rights, environmental causes. But becoming involved in any meaningful way was seldom within reach it seemed. Not until I went to college.

Mine are now 17 and 13, and while their avenues to get involved are just as limited as mine were then, neither of them even seem to take any durable interest in the bigger world around them, even though we both tune them into these topics regularly. They remind me of my sisters, who were only a year younger than me, but never gave these issues much thought at all. And never did. Some folks seem to have that outward curiosity in the way the world ticks, and others don't.

I tried to engage my daughter in the story behind Malala, the young teenage girl from Pakistan campaigning for girls' education rights who was nearly killed for holding those views. Got nowhere. All you can do is try, I guess.

Commendable. When I was that age I was preoccupied with sports and chasing skirt. Although I did march in the Vietnam war protests. That was pretty cool.

My 13 y.o. gets to hear with (her words) alarming frequency, her Dad going on about this or that (often Ticker related), and it does sink in, but it all goes out the window with her boy-band obsession, 1Direction (**** you very much Simon Cowell). She is crazy smart, but just turns to mush and is way too caught up via social media with the goings-on regarding EVERYTHING these guys do :(

I can't wait 'til she outgrows it.

what was wrong with that at that age? Sports was the only thing that made sense - the other didnt matter as much.

as for Kony and those against him - i disgree with the leaders of said movement because of its more leftist bushisms and what not - but at least when it comes to try and stop this bullcrap conserning child solders its a good thing and your daughter should be proud.

Trust me, when the ICC lady was speaking it was all I could do to avoid calling "Bull****!" from the back of the hall....

There were a few thinly-veiled barbs at the US in there, but surprisingly few. Also surprising was that the entire event -- including the dance party -- was amazingly family-friendly. The head of the organization was actually on the stage with his young kids and wife dancing during the evening.

Well I think driving to DC - taking daughter & friend wouldn't have been much more painful than taking daughter & friend to Orlando for a screamo concert a few weeks ago.

Just because you don't enjoy the music/cause doesn't mean you cannot support your kid.

Yes some of it is "tin foil hat" carp, but follow the money

Exposed: Kony 2012 Scam Is a Soros/NGO Front

Alex Jones & Aaron Dykes
Prison Planet.com
March 15, 2012

Kony 2012, hyped on the backs of celebrities and do-gooders, is revealed for what it is– a propaganda salvo for a continent wide invasion of Africa. Yes, the mantra War is Peace is once again drumming U.S. soldiers into further conflict.

Research makes clear that KONY is a sophisticated psy-op to muster popular support for what is, in reality, nothing more than a geostrategic positioning vis-a-vis China for oil and mineral resources, as well as an effort to legitimize the U.S. military’s AFRICOM unit in the region through newly-branded “humanitarian” interventions.

It is not only War in the name of “Peace,” but an attempt to empower the International Criminal Court under the influence of NGOs and other related globalist corporate interests.

Nobel Peace Prize “winner” Barack Obama has already deployed 100 special forces troops to the central African region back in October 2011, and a resolution in Congress– on the heels of KONY 2012′s viral views of at lest 80 million– seeks to send more forces there for an all out invasion on the pretext of hunting down a shadowy warlord with less blood on his hands than an average African despot.

Top celebrities vying for greater power including CFR member and UN goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie, actor George Clooney, media baroness Oprah Winfrey, as well as Africa-obsessed Bill Gates and Bono, have all come out in front of this issue.

Exposed: Kony 2012 Scam Is a Soros/NGO Front Soros ICG Samantha Power Angelina Jolie KONY

But behind KONY’s apparent urgency are the usual suspects, the hidden hands behind uprisings and color revolutions including the Arab Spring and Libyan invasion. A key World Net Daily investigation makes clear that George Soros and his International Crisis Group, headed by former National Security Advisor Zbigniew Brzezinski, and the likes of Samantha Power, a key member of Obama’s National Security Council advancing “humanitarian” causes, have significantly framed and shaped the manufactured crisis surrounding the now-famous head of the Lord’s Resistance Army. Like Libya, the Responsibility to Protect doctrine– created and advanced by Soros, Samantha Power and other power players– gives the impetus for intervention in the conflict. Groups like Invisible Children, who produced KONY 2012, are pawns in their game.

Well, not from from my camera, but I did get some rather interesting video from the middle of the mosh of crowd-surfing. So yes, I was in the middle of it -- with some pretty expensive gear -- and got out both alive and with my gear intact smiley

Supporting my son in Cub Scouts as a den leader is some of the hardest work I've ever been involved with. He seems to like it and I'm hoping it takes.

The biggest problem is dealing with the parents. I feeling like a friggin counselor sometimes! The kids are great.

Do we really want to see Karl dancing?!
