Below is a link to the thread where someone called "stuffmonger" talks extensively about his experiments with the substances, his research into bacterial Quorum Sensing, and shows some photos of his jungle lab. There's also this quote: "My name is John, and my main focus is the effect of medicinal tropical plants on bacteria, and vice versa. I don't need to tell you my exact location, because it doesn't really matter... I do research on the chemical signaling molecules that all bacteria use to upregulate gene expressions." Remember the whole Reiser hullabulloo a few years back? Beware eccentric nerds with time and money on their hands. :-) Sadly, it was the effective doom of ReiserFS - I doubt this will be the end of McAfee however.

Well if that's true then it's a lesson for anyone thinking about becoming an ExPat..... I've often noted that when you're "the gringo" it's really, really easy to wind up in a situation where all that money you think you have is worth exactly nothing as you're seen more as food than anything else.

One of the first comments on the wired link I posted is someone mentioning how Belize manipulates ExPats into investing their money in the country and then changes the rules of the game on them once they get there. Not too surprising, but unsettling for sure.
I went to San Pedro for the first time last May on a dive trip, and there are a lot of businesses and condos for sale, targeted at foreigners, so I guess it's big business for them.
I did enjoy the town and the trip though. Decent diving in a very relaxed (almost primitive) beach environment. Just not making any plans to live there or start researching bath salts in the jungle, lol!
