To Whiners On Response To Sandy: STFU

From Hoboken:

Tempers flared Wednesday morning outside City Hall as some residents complained the city was slow to get food and other supplies out to the stranded.

Huh?

How in the hell did people get stranded?

Hurricanes are one of the most-avoidable "disasters."  You typically get 2, 3, 4 or even five days of warning that they're coming.  In this particular case the forecasts were for an impact somewhere in New Jersey with serious and severe impacts from Washington DC to New York City.

Guess what -- the forecast verified.

OK, so you were warned.  You ignored the warning and stayed in a place where you could be stranded.  That's a choice.  But with that choice comes responsibility -- to have food, water, a means of communication that will work (e.g. battery-powered HAM radio and the knowledge to use it) and a willing acceptance of the risk that something awful could happen to you.

If you were unwilling to accept that risk then you leave before the storm comes.

Period.

The government owes you nothing.  Your fellow man owes you nothing.  That doesn't mean that Americans won't help -- we will and do, but it does mean you're not owed anything.

The same thing was true with Katrina.  There we had days of warning and people whined that they had "no way out."  Yes they did -- in 48 hours you can walk to safety out of the area even if you're broke! Those who decided not to made a choice and then got the consequences of that choice.

This does not make the government responsible for saving your ass when you make that decision.  It means you're responsible.  It means you decided, you get the win or the lose.

I've done it several times here in Florida when it comes to storms.  I decided to stay despite an evacuation order when Ivan was coming.  I knew there was a risk I would get trapped in my home with rapidly-rising water and be in serious trouble.  I evaluated that risk, along with all the other risks, including the possibility of being excluded from my own property and thus being unable to mitigate any damage that occurred due to the local gendarme refusing to let me come back into the area after the storm, and decided to stay.

That decision turned out to be the correct one.  I was able to prevent damage that would have likely otherwise occurred.  The outcome was superior because of my decision.

But things could have gone wrong, and if they did, it was my decision and my responsibility.

Not someone else's.

I'm tired of the whiners.  All of you who are dependent on government in this fashion had better grow the hell up and stop acting like infants.

The time is coming, and soon, when nanny government is not going to be able to help you any more.

Get this through your head folks -- the day of sticking out your hand for Government to "help you" on demand are ending.

When, not if, that happens dependency will mean death, not discomfort.

Government has made promises it cannot keep.  This is a matter of arithmetic, not politics.  It is not about left and right, it is about facts.  It is about 2 + 2, not liberal or conservative.  It is about the fact that one cannot "print" their way to prosperity nor can you borrow your way out of debt.

Food Stamp Nation people, whiners who knowingly and intentionally stayed in basement apartments with an approaching hurricane, those who parked cars in underground garages with a predicted storm surge of 10 feet and 10-15' of waves on top of it, those who didn't bother filling up their cars with gasoline before the storm came in and more all deserve what they got.  Those facilities managers who put generators, fuel tanks with unprotected pumps and vents and/or switchgear in basements knowing full well that hurricanes can and might strike that part of the country should have the board of directors and/or shareholders they answer to string them up by their nuts.

Yes, Sandy was a nasty storm.  But it was a predicted nasty storm, the impacts were expected to be ugly and anyone who found themselves stranded (or worse) as a consequence knew damn well what was coming and made the decision to both fail to prepare and ride it out where they were.

Nut up and take responsibility for yourself.

Next time there may not be a government response available -- at all.

The pussification of America is on full display. It's disgusting to watch and makes me ashamed of my country. I can't wait for these FSA ****S to get what's coming to them.

The Drudge headlines were a big part of why I wrote this piece.

I saw the headlines a few days ago..and thought, no FOOD? The storm just hit two days ago and you had days of warning.
Absolutely pathetic. In nature stupid kills, and soon it will again, we can't afford it.

Wait a second, Karl... are you saying that people should take responsibility for their own lives and decisions? That'll be the day. When you've infantilised a population to rely on big government by regulating and controlling everything not tied down and buying their votes with other people's money in lieu of instituting policies to solve real issues, don't be surprised when cold, hungry people get cranky and start throwing their rattles.

People in the northeast are shockingly ignorant about the way hurricanes work. I just can't understand it in a post-Katrina world. I pleaded with friends to get the hell out of NYC in the run-up to Irene, honest pleas which were met with derision beforehand and ridicule following. These are well off children of middle class parents who could easily find refuge away from a possible storm surge. It seems as though these days you have to be a poker player to understand that you can be right and lose, or wrong and win. I'm going to try my best to swallow my told you so's in coming weeks.

This time I just packed up as much as I could in my Highlander, wished my neighbors in Ocean City luck and got the hell away from the ocean.

Deathshead, just on time inventory can be a MF if no deliveries are arriving. And to be honest, New Yorkers are conditioned to being able to get anything they want delivered to their apartment at any time of day. This is no exaggeration, nothing like having Indian food delivered by a Russian hooker at 4 in the morning, especially if she brings drugs so you don't have to make a second call.

Also that mayor of Hoboken would not be getting my vote, she was obviously losing her **** on ANderson Cooper the other night - an executive at any level sure as hell better be cool under fire. Her tune (and tone) totally changed a night later, probably after Democratic strategists were pointing out that going against Christie at the moment is political suicide.

I'm starting to wonder if this is "next time" already.

The amount of damage to the NYC underground is going to be HORRENDOUS and will take YEARS to repair. Subways are SCREWED, sideways. Even after the gas situation is straightened out, travel in and out of the city is going to be absolutely ridiculous for a LONG TIME. Commute from the suburbs? Start looking for a new job. You're not gonna be able to get there and back.

New York City is a prelude to what awaits America IMO. Once credit freezes up and the necessities are no longer on-time available, I expect desperation to kick in.........quickly. Only, as Karl points out, the Government won't be there to help.

we have the king of the FSA on the loose too, NYC. The NYC budget is almost as high as the 2 year budget for the state of Texas. That covers 250,000 square miles and about 23 million people. The excuse is NY and company pay more taxes. No, the tax payment is the suck of Wall Street out of the rest of the nation. Bonuses alone would more than pay the tab for the Texas government for 2 years.

In any case, you can bet the Federal tab will go into the hundreds of billions. I am sure there will be a riot with the angry burning down their neighborhoods. Bennie will probably double QE to give the city another shot of dope.

As far a leaving in front of a hurricane? I recall the evacuation of the Houston area after with the hurricane after Katrina. The death toll of everyone trying to get out was worse than the storm. I'm not sure you could that many people out of a city on 4 days notice. There should have been some extra food brought in, stuff you could open and eat and chase down with bottled water. As far as staying? As long as I was above flood and the winds weren't over 100 MPH, what would worry me would be the tornados. They can take a well built structure apart and put you in the next county.

I'm supposed to visit family, in the part of queens that didn't burn or flood, for 2 days returning from Europe end of the month. They called yesterday and recommend I bypass NYC "It's a f&*king mess here"...and they don't have to leave queens for work.

I still can't get over no food even with "just in time"...I mean with my freezer alone my family will be good for a few weeks. Sure we'd have to bust our asses the first day to preserve the meat after deciding opsec means don't turn on the generator or we are out of fuel...Then there is the pantry, the costco bulk in the basement, and then the "imanut(tm)" survival stash of mountain house #10 cans.

New York state asks Washington to cover all storm costs
By Edith Honan and Susan Cornwell | Reuters – Wed, Oct 31, 2012

Quote:
NEW YORK/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - New York state on Wednesday asked the U.S. federal government to pay all the costs of cleaning up and repairing damage from massive storm Sandy that tore through the Northeast this week and crippled New York City.

Governor Andrew Cuomo said he is asking fellow Democrat, President Barack Obama, to pay 100 percent of the estimated $6 billion bill, at a time that state and local government budgets remain constrained by a weak economic recovery.

That would be a significant change from last year when the federal government covered about 75 percent of the $1.2 billion cost paid by New York to clean up after storm Irene hit the region.

The two U.S. senators from neighboring New Jersey, the other state hit hardest by the storm, also asked that the federal government cover more than the usual share of the cost, given the size of the disaster and the financially strapped local coffers.

"Recent storms in New Jersey have already placed a significant burden on our state and local governments, which have been forced to pay for disaster response and will need federal assistance for recovery from Hurricane Sandy," Senator Frank Lautenberg and Senator Robert Menendez, both Democrats, wrote in a letter to Obama.

"While we understand the federal share is typically 75 percent of these total costs, the unprecedented and extraordinary extent of damage Hurricane Sandy has caused to our state merits an adjustment to this cost-share to 90 to 100 percent federal coverage," the two senators said.

New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, a Republican, did not reply to request of comments...

Crap. So what happens next summer if a Category 5 hurricane hits anywhere from Florida to Texas, or another massive storm along the east coast? This is a HUGE black swan, and we are seeing the vulnerability in the system, because there is no money, anywhere, to deal with all of this. Just imagine if the West Coast gets the big one?

Screw that. Since the majority in NYC believe that this is a result of global warming, they can just enact a city-wide carbon tax to pay for it.
