Apple Blows Out Its Own Brains

Apple, you see, has this hard-on for Android and Google.

There's only one problem.  Apple's a copycat company with a fanboi userbase.  And now, in their hubris, they took on one of the reasons to have a smartphone in the first place, mapping functions, and totally screwed it up in their zeal to stick the knife in Google's back.

This is the Manhatten bridge -- which is now a roller coaster.  There are landmarks that are in the wrong place as well -- ball parks that aren't where people left them, for instance.

Maps and mapping functions aren't just integral to one of the core functions of a smartphone (using it as a navigation device) but in addition tie into social media in a major way.

That Apple boned this, on top of Siri, which is one of the worst jokes ever in the user interface universe (for what it's worth Vlingo and Google's functionality in that regard are no better) but has been pushed as one of the reasons to buy an iPhone, leaves Apple with having managed to destroy one of the key features that make owning a smartphone worthwhile.

Worse, this same update was pushed to the iPhone 4S so you can't even evade this by not buying an iPhone 5 if you were foolish enough to let iTunes update you!

Oops.

Heh Cook -- that's you I smell frying over there in California!

BTW - won't make much of a difference in stock price. Every hedge fund is counting on AAPL to pull them through. Sales of Iphone 5 look pretty good. C'mon, where you gonna put your money - treasury bonds? ;-)

Right, didn't JP Morg say that the Iphone would increase the GDP? Just buy that $849 phone. Must create a ton of jobs, right?

This is not going to impact sales with the cult base this company has.

Won't matter, they don't see flaws or just gloss over them, same with Obama's fans.

I'm flummoxed. Why would they sabotage their own product? Google has their own maps/streetview apps on the apple market, right? Just use those instead. Maybe I'm missing something from this story.

Bennie is going to take care of that. They will be too poor to pay the phone bill. They are going to continue to lose market share and once people figure out they are flushing several hundred dearly needed dollars down the drain per phone, something else will prevail. I have a friend that is an apple nut. He paid, I think $3000 for an Apple laptop. Has trouble digging $20 up to go to the ballgame. Has an iPhone too.

I don't own an iphone, but my friend who does is bitching about the maps feature since he downloaded IOS6 yesterday. Mainly because THEY REMOVED THE GOOGLE MAPS APP AND REPLACED WITH THEIR OWN! So you don't have a choice.

Now his iPhone will start to pay for itself $20 at a time by making him unable to find the ballpark!

Ah, but seriously though this story is a nothing sandwich. I've seen some bad software launches, these things happen all the time, Apple doesn't have a magical amulet to prevent the occasional buggy launch.

There are too many legitimate criticisms of tech manufacturers, like the whole slavery thing, to spend time taking pot-shots about CrApple fanboys being disappointed about buggy software. I dunno much about Siri, other than that it records everything you say to it and sends the audio to Apple..

(Edit)Well, I didn't know that.. Classic Apple though, all hail the omniproprietary dark-age-ification of computing!

Apple has really earned some justified hate with this Maps move (from one who likes Apple products). The 3D maps seem like the only thing they would be good for in the first place is a slick TV commercial. I want to see the slick TV commercial that features this nightmare:

My favourite screw up at the moment is that they got the location of their own flagship Apple store in Sydney WRONG! They've placed it across the street from where it actually is in their maps.

I think that fits in the "epic fail" category nicely!

Its bullish for construction as municipalities will be compelled by rabid Apple fans to actually re-construct things to match what is shown on the Apple maps.
