New Investment Idea: High-Capacity Magazines

From another user on the forum.... (credit to C4talyst)

Schumer and friends are trying to add a high-capacity (> 10 rounds) magazine ban to the cybersecurity bill.  In the finest of Senate tradition, when you can't actually bring a bill honestly and pass it, you slip the crap you want into something else.

If this were to pass then high-capacity magazines would of course become extremely valuable.

So whether you own a gun or not, well.....

(Incidentally, the same thing happened after the former "assault weapon" ban.  Pre-ban magazines and firearms got a lot more valuable in a big hurry......)

Supply and demand, you know.

Oh, and if you do own a gun the sponsors to which you should direct an appropriate response are:

Democratic Sens. Frank Lautenberg (N.J.), Barbara Boxer (Calif.), Jack Reed (R.I.), Bob Menendez (N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (N.Y.), Schumer and Dianne Feinstein (Calif.).

Here's my politically-incorrect response to all of them:

Careful though. David Koresh bought tons of stripped AR lowers (a piece of metal with a serial number) as an investment for his group.

Didn't work out well.

I've thought this same thing since 2004 when the AWB expired. It was just a matter of time until the next serious attempt was made to ban them again. Prices will skyrocket again after the ban.

The only place I've ever needed a high capacity magazine is in a timed exercise.

Its a macho accessory, but if its really needed than I'd much rather be a long ways away from the scene.

I'm much rather stock up on primers & other reloading supplies.

Marvin, you're missing the point. If you didn't already buy primers you'll find them scarce now - and expensive.

OTOH if, for example, you purchased an ass load of Pmags a few months ago for $12 each then you can handily turn a profit.

If you're more comfortable holding things you actually use then I hope you bought an ass load of primers over the last year or so. News of a 500% tax on ammo would make your stash look pretty good won't it?

So what are they saying....If this 'Cyber Secerity' bill passes Glock can't ship a gun into the US with a > 10 round magazine?!?!?! I guess we will all be relegated to just a six shooter revolver.

During the 94 AWB the mags produced had to be date stamped and had big dents in the sides so you couldn't removed a floor plate, change a spring, etc to make them high capacity.

Companies like Para Ordnance (known at the time for double stack 1911s) went on 24/7 production of high cap magazines in order to extend demand and get them in storage before the date requirement kicked in.

They would then sell the gun with a 10 round mag, but include a certificate to allow you to purchase two high capacity magazines out of stock at a later date.

Lol - I'd love to own a gun store right now, assuming you could re-stock it - I don't see this passing personally but A LOT of **** is going to be panic purchased... I remember getting $550 for a Beta-C mag in the late 90's:-) could be re-purchased for $240 after the ban expired...

EDIT - all bets are off on the not passing thing if we get a couple more "Batman" nut job situation's...

Boxher and Feinschtein...big surprise there. I remember when Feinstein went door to door in SF and asked for your gun...

They were offering a price club $50 gift card or something...

It is a pity that was just days after my horrible boating accident while trandsporting all of my firearms...

Sorry Senator...

That "sponsored by" list reads like a who's-who of Senators: Boxer, Feinstein, Schumer. Pretty much the All-Star team right there.

Thanks for the heads up Karl, I'm in for 10 Magpul PMAGs.

I don't have a particular need for any high-cap mags but it's damn tempting to pick up a whole ****ing case or three of the GI-style ones -- not because I have a use for them, but simply for investment purposes.

well - if memory serves they (the alum. version 30 rounders) we're in the mid $30's during the ban but there was an understanding that if you waited until '94 and the sunset you could buy them cheaper - if these asshats manage to pass it again there likely won't BE a sunset...

They basically tripled in price during the ban. The thing is, if there's no "sunset" this time what will the price be? Triple? 5x original? 10x?

Whatever the seller decides to ask for them - kinda like pre-86 transferrable machine guns - the supply will be finite.

It may be more than that...because the proposed law specifically prohibits selling them, and if phrased differently than last time, even pre-existing ones may be 'unsalable' except on the black market.

Pretty sure I saw a "pre enactment" clause in there - wait one...

Edit:

Clause (i) shall not apply to the possession of a large capacity ammunition feeding device otherwise lawfully possessed within the United States on or before the date of the enactment of this subsection.

Good move Karl, using the flaming finger.

A red dot or cross hair would be out of the question....for the moment.

Wise investment though, prices will go up, availability on popular calibers will decrease, back order times will increase.

What I read was, "would make it illegal to transfer or possess large capacity feeding devices"

So, it sounds to me like you can't tranfer after a certain date. Now, how they would track transfers without having S/Ns added to the "feeding devices" I have no idea.
