Mayor Bloomberg: FU (Batman Shooting)

I was not going to comment in a political context on this tragedy until I saw the following:

New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, a long-time advocate ofgun control, called on both candidates to address what they would do to help prevent such tragedies.

“No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them concretely, not just in generalities --specifically what are they going to do about guns?” Bloomberg said today on WOR Radio. The mayor is founder and majority owner of Bloomberg News parent Bloomberg LP.

Gun control is why this murderous assailant managed to kill 20 people and nobody had a crack at shooting him, as they were unarmed.

Let's look at the facts of this event.  Metal detectors and searches would have done nothing to prevent this, but would have treated every patron as a felon.  The assailant came in through a back door, which means he tampered with a crash-bar equipped exit at some previous time or had "help."  Those exits are necessary for fire safety purposes.

Reports are that the assailant was wearing body armor.  This would have made him much more difficult to shoot and stop for an armed citizen, but body armor is not "bullet proof"; it is bullet resistent, and if you take a round in the chest while wearing it the energy is still dissipated on your chest -- it just doesn't make a hole.  Continuing to shoot people while being punched in the chest (pretty much what the shooter would be experiencing) would be difficult -- but not impossible.

The presence of a bunch of openly-carried or concealed weapons might have done nothing.  A pistol against a guy toting a rifle or shotgun is not a "fair fight" but it beats nothing, which is what the victims had.  The option to fight back is better than no option at all, whether you can or do choose to use it or not.  Oh, and let's not forget that it appears that Cinemark, the company that owns the theater, appears to prohibit by policy law-abiding citizens carrying concealed weapons.  If the assailant knew this (and it is, apparently, posted on signs at the ticket counter of at least some of their theaters) then he knew that every patron in the place was literally a walking target unable to defend him or herself as law-abiding citizens are disarmed by signs -- but criminals are not.

We do not know what the shooter's beef was with the theater or the people in it.  We will likely learn at least some of that in coming days and weeks.  The alleged shooter is in custody and reportedly has no prior criminal record, so clues are not to be found there.

The simple fact of the matter is that there is a tiny percentage of people who are cracked in the head.  Walking into a theater armed to the teeth and carrying incendiary devices to intentionally drive people to where you can more-easily shoot them is the act of a depraved mind and evidences obvious premeditation and intent.  The criminal justice system will mete out the punishment it is able for this circumstance, which will be wholly inadequate as you can only take a murderous thug's life once with capital punishment.

The Second Amendment and fully-recognized Constitutional Carry is the only means available to mitigate these sorts of events.  Firearms and smoke bombs are neither difficult to acquire nor can they be made difficult to acquire or even construct for someone with murderous intent, and as such the idea that "gun control" will ever do anything other than disarm law-abiding citizens is the worst sort of crap argument from ethically and morally-bankrupt fascists who themselves employ armed security around them at all times.

Mayor Bloomberg can pontificate on whether Constitutional Carry should be prohibited and the Second Amendment amended, which is the only lawful means to alter it, if and when, and only if and when, he dismisses all of his own armed security and turns over his own firearms -- all of them.

Until then, Mayor, you're a jackbooted ******* politician trying to exploit the death of people at the hand of an obviously-deranged individual and need to shut the **** up.

Batman did not come for rescue ? I do not agree that anyone carrying a gun would have prevented this in such situation. Panic, confusion and pure fear would have increased the bodycount by multiple "good" people shooting random to shoot the shooter.

That isn't actually such a "tiny percentage" anymore, I assure you. Go have some conversations with more "average" people, not the usual folks you might converse with. A large swath of our society is not quite all there. Of course, the likelihood of them gunning down people at random is fortunately not, at this point, a serious concern......

When businesses publicly display that they prohibit firearms, do they not also publicly announce to a deranged individual like this one that he will meet little resistance?

In other words "Weapons Prohibited" also says "Easy Targets Here" for those inclined to think that way, no?

In the words of Judge Napolitano, which I quote almost word-for-word from memory:

“The 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting. There’s only one reason for the 2nd Amendment. It’s so you and I can own guns and KILL leaders of our country who have become tyrants!”

Great ticker...except...this is not entirely true. There is this thing called a treaty, and we need to watch out for this backdoor tactic.

Back in the 70s a fellow soldier was talking about being shot in the chest while wearing body armor. He was a door gunner on a helicopter. The shot slammed him back against the floor and his chest was burning as he gasped to catch his breath. I am guessing that he was shot with an AK-47. So, Genesis is probably right that even with body armot, the body has to absorb the energy of the bullet. An armed citizen could have taken this shooter out of action for a while. And, of course, there are legs and arms and the head to shoot for.

Ironman,

A responsible gun owner would have known not to start spraying random gunfire into a panicked movie theater. He/she would either hit the deck and wait for a clear shot, or get the hell out like everyone else.

The two, predictable lefty nut responses have been yours (that all gun owners can't handle their firearms and like to just go bang-bang), and of course, stricter gun control laws would have been respected and followed by this law-breaking criminal.

Yep, and if you're a lefty gun-banner and display it here I will respect your ability to be here as much as Cinemark respects The Second Amendment, and treat you identically.

Consider that official Market Ticker policy.

The timing of this couldn't be worse for gun owners and watching Obama speak, I could see the smirk on his face, knowing that the UN gun treating is coming up.

We have a gun show here in Phoenix this weekend and I am sure there will be a lot of talk about this. I am betting we see some media show up and video the show. I wager this weekend will be all about banning guns with the liberal media leading the charge. The next week or so should be interesting......

IMO the real advantage of an armed public is as a deterrent. Even crazy people will think twice when they have to weigh the possibility their plan may fail because they may be met with armed resistance.

Someone may or may not have been able to stop this once it started. But I have to ask, would this have started if their was a high probability of resistance? Not too many people walk into a police station and start shooting. Then again, it is going to happen sometimes, like Ft. Hood.

Mental illness is epidemic in America. I read that one in five are taking anti-depressants, anti-psychotics or anti-anxiety drugs. I'm amazed horrific acts like this don't take place every other week. But no doubt it will add more fodder to the gun control message. Ironic that Columbine and now this happened in a lib state with far less than 2% of the US population. I have no idea what the gun laws are like in Aurora but I suspect it's pretty restrictive.

Actually, I think the timing is as good as it can be (I don't mean to disrespect the victims in saying this), in that the Florida cafe incident occurred just before this. There's a perfect, real-world example demonstrating how the second amendment is supposed to work, and that can't be ignored in the discussion.

They used an incident like this to take all the guns in Australia. What do we have, one of these every 2 years? Seems I recall the nut with the Arizona Congresswoman and the incident at Fort Hood. In the meantime, several thousand people have been maimed or killed by the introduction of the iphone. I dodge one about every day. I would assume that texting while driving would already be deemed reckless driving with any kind of video. Going to ban the iphone?

Also, anyone who hasn't figured out Bloomberg is a totalitarian fascist who firmly believes in dictatorship, needs to get their head out of their ass and look. It was for government by guys like him that the right to self defense and self determination was explicitedly placed in the bill of rights.

My thoughts exactly..I mean seriously, just because I have a gun permit I don't run around like the Wild West shooting every time I hear a cracking noise.

--

I'm sick of Leftys using tragedies like this to talk gun control. First of all, it is not difficult to attain a gun ILLEGALLY, so what do the criminals do when guns are banned? They have a FN party like in Chicago.

Would the gun laws have prevented this kid from making homemade bombs that if detonated in that theater would of killed A LOT more people? What if he drove his car right through the back door and covered the first 5 rows? Gun control is not the answer.

Sailor,

In the Fort Hood incident, ALL the soldiers were FIRST DISARMED (except for MPs). No ammo. The Islamic Terrorist had a pretty much 'free fire zone' - and he knew it.

Hmmm, a pattern emerges??? In all of these recent incidents, what is the common theme? All of the locations were, "Gun Free Zones." Maybe we should look into THAT?

Nahhh.

Hell Gen I don't own a gun and don't plan on it. And I'd listen to those advocating gun control laws if only they'd be effective. Hell who really needs a gun if nobody has them. (Lord help us what the politicians would do then with no fear of retribution from the common folk) But as we see time and again when you take away guns from the people it does nothing but drive violent crime up. So it appears to me that Bloomberg is an idiot.

Here I found his picture.

And Ironman I don't disagree that more innocent people might have been shot if people were packing. But maybe this idiot would have known he was going to meet Lucifer if people were packing and then maybe he just stays home.
