Ha Ha Ha: Greece Figured It Out!

I like it!

Mr. Tsipras says that, if push comes to shove, Greece can manage on its own. By not paying its debts, the country will have enough cash to pay its workers and retirees, he says. He also proposes cuts in defense spending, cracking down on waste and corruption, and tackling widespread tax evasion by the rich.

"Whatever we do, things will be difficult. But it will also be difficult at the same time for all of Europe because the euro will collapse" if Greece's funding is cut off, says Mr. Tsipras. He adds that both sides should step back "before we reach that point" and find a "European solution."

Now you're screwed Christine Lagarde, Merkel and the various ECB wonks.  They figured it out over in Greece.

You have crap cards and Tsipras has a Royal Straight Flush.

Now he may be lying, but if he's not he knows that he can pay the workers and retirees -- if he walks on the debt payments.

This means he holds the trump hand.  He can operate internally and tell you all to stuff it.  And assuming he's telling the truth and really has run the numbers, the ECB, Merkel and the rest of the Eurozone is stuffed on trying to force anything down Greece's throat.

He also wants to nationalize the banking system.  Now, if he goes further and forces a "One Dollar of Capital" standard for all banks inside Greece, then the game-playing stops but so does the systemic risk -- inside Greece.

Now what's left for the rest of Europe?  They've got a problem -- a big problem.  By nationalizing the banking system he flushes the private parties that would otherwise play "hand grenade" with the economy and government.

This doesn't mean that Syriza won't screw it up, of course.  He might.

But it leaves the door open to solve the problem and stabilize the banking and monetary system in Greece going forward.

It's about damn time.

This is too good to be true. Imagine what would happen if every debt-stricken country were to realize this ...

Jamesbond... that's not out of the realm of possibility... If Greece does this, Spain, Portugal, Italy etc. will be watching and might well do it too... declare their own "Jubilee".

This would truly create a fuse leading right to Germany's living room, assuming they want to be left holding that bag.

I'm not getting this.

If Tsipras is correct in what he claims, would this not be the equivalent of the US claiming that by eliminating all payments on the federal debt, we would have a balanced budget?

Since that is obviously not true for the US, isn't the implication here that Greece is in better overall shape than the US from a budgetary/financial standpoint?

Ah, here's the rub -- they have to.

Note that he didn't say "what they were originally promised."

They will have lots of work to do. If the people can gain control of their country. After decades of pork the government payrolls are off the hook. Weeding out imbedded graft and the imperial mindset will take honest people with integrity. Ditching the bankers gets you nothing if the ones that sold you out are still around.jmo

They might be reaching a more level playing field. Soon. I hope.

by eliminating all payments (default), they would be forced to have a balanced budget.

by promising to pay people for their jobs (.gov workers currently aren't being paid) and their pensions (have to imagine these aren't being paid out either), he's properly presenting default as a return to the normal day to day. BUT there will be hard times as everything gets put back together.

Precisely. Many people will settle for a downsized paycheck if they have the hope of their kids not being debt-slaves, surviving, and possibly making more in the future vs. being serfs for the rest of their lives. This has even been realized stateside, with employees appealing to corporate management to enforce a pay-cut rather than layoffs.

Yep. Realize the fraud and refuse to partake in it any longer. Errect the finger, wish em all good luck and goodbye, and get your own house back in order. This also applies on a personal level.

Was I the only one who was surprised to learn Greece has a Defense budget that can be cut?

Color me skeptical on the rest. "Pay its workers and retirees?" Sure, at probably .25 on the 1, I suppose. "Cracking down on waste and corruption?" Right, never heard that one before. "Tackling widespread tax evasion by the rich?" Isn't tax compliance in Greece something like less than 20% across the board? Looks like they have bigger problems than those filthy, dirty "rich" people when it comes to "tax evasion".
