I find these "from China" / "from Europe" / "from wherever" statements rather useless, especially when in the context of DDOS attacks and hack attempts. Just because you can trace the country of the IP attacking you doesn't mean the attacker is really there.

More often than not, the attacks go through PCs infected with rootkits that became part of a botnet. The PCs that are most likely to get commandeered in this way are ones running old, non-updated versions of MS Windows, that is, computers in countries where piracy is rampant. This is one of the biggest reasons why lots of spam and DDOS attacks come from countries like China, for example.

The people actually writing and profiting from the spam and hacks are all over the globe...

I havent found a single physical person in India in other different forums or collegues who has heard about tickerforum in last 3 yrs. Here ppl are too much ignorant and self indulgent to get hand on that.
When Karl writes many attacks come from "India", I feel like ppl are probably more intelligent than what I perceive. Maybe many PCs in cycbercafes are left unattended and are perfect drone-boxes to start an attack.Who cares about antivirus here!

They're not coming from cybercafes. Most of the Chinese attacks are coming from places that can be linked to state sponsors.

Gen, do us all a favor - instead of IP banning put an ipchain rule to forward them to Paul Krugman's blog :)

Delay the returns and sort all the words in the messages returned in alphabetical order.

Yea, that's why I thought it might work.

Also, it returns data that will seem real to most algorithms yet be total gibberish.

It seems to me that typing 'wget -r -nc tickerforum.org' with perhaps a couple more options would do, or attempt to do, what this ticker is describing. Is this what's going on?

More-or-less (more less than more since there's an attempt made not to grab the same thing twice on subsequent runs.)

Burya -- incidentally, don't try that. It will result in a banned IP address smiley
