I don't know. I thought the host who went ballistic was kind of being a dick. He could just have disagreed with the caller and let that be that, but he decided to work himself up into a perfect tizzy. He's probably right that screaming like a madman makes for good radio, ratings-wise, and being calm doesn't bring the listeners. I'm just not that into screaming, I guess.

It's the same **** everywhere, a few months ago one or two callers called into WLS and chastised the host for using the word "niggardly"...somehow this TERM was racist.

The trashcan of the nation

It's called liberals and their ridiculous sensitivities. They have destroyed a once great nation with this PC horse ****. The next civil war won't be racial in nature. It will be liberal vs. conservative. I know I for one am sick of their ****. Multiply me by 200 million and Houston we have a problem. The Northern Virginia area is destroyed because of their policies. Look at Cali, Illinois, Detroit, etc. Anywhere where liberals are in charge is a dump heap. And this aint no D vs. R rant. It's a L vs. C rant and how totally different their mindset is from that which America was founded upon.

Some 4 or 5 years ago a board member of a Washington D.C. transit board in the course of an official meeting used the term "niggardly" in proper context and was ultimately forced to resign. Even though the black members of the board agreed the word was correctly used they still thought it sounded racist. The irony is the ousted board member was gay.

Quote:I thought the host who went ballistic was kind of being a dick. There is a ton of show history and backstory to this rant. Emmis Communications bought a handful of Austin radio stations about 12 years ago. They instantly started implementing absurd HQ-derived policies that affected how the hosts got to do their show on air; or face possible cancellation. The worst was the Janet Jackson boob flash on the Super Bowl halftime show, which was used by conservative thought police to get the FCC to fine radio hosts up to (I think) 1 million dollars per use of indecent words. But there is no clear definition of what these words exactly are. They are told in yearly sensitivity training that they say something every single day that technically could get them fired. So while trying to do an honest, real show that doesn't have contrived bits and is totally made up, they have to dance around this issue every day. Every day they have to stop and say, "Dammit, I don't know if I can say this on the air or not." Which leads them to go to ridiculous lengths to describe a female's sex organs, without actually saying the word "vagina", for instance. It drives them insane. Two other Emmis Austin stations have had show hosts suspended (almost fired) for offending small segments of the public who then caused an uproar in the local media. Management finally said, "No more! The next one is fired on the spot." So that is what they live with in every segment in every show. They try and do good radio but constantly have to check their swing in case they might be offending some group or running afoul of the FCC. It's complete bull****.

If that audio had been posted anywhere but here, I would have stopped it at the absolutely idiotic comment he made that everyone who fights in a war is a hero. I'm sure Lt. Calley, his platoon, and former Einsatzgruppen members would appreciate that, along with many other war criminals.
The overly PC-conscious caller has no valid point in his criticism, but I also suspect that the show host may be exposing his bigoted past graphically on the air more for ratings than for education. Shock radio.

Quote:Shock radio. He has mellowed out a lot, but his first 12-15 years on air were definitely shock radio. And he readily admits it. That's his roots.

this is the version I used to hear and it seems alright to me: Quote:
Daniel Boone was a man, Yes, a big man! With an eye like an eagle And as tall as a mountain was he!
Daniel Boone was a man, Yes, a big man! He was brave, he was fearless And as tough as a mighty oak tree!
From the coonskin cap on the top of ol' Dan To the heel of his rawhide shoe; The rippin'est, roarin'est, fightin'est man The frontier ever knew!
Daniel Boone was a man, Yes, a big man! And he fought for America To make all Americans free!
What a Boone! What a doer! What a dream come-er-true-er was he!
Daniel Boone was a man! Yes, a big man! With a whoop and a holler he c'd mow down a forest of trees!
Daniel Boone was a man! Yes, a big man! If he frowned at a river In July all the water would freeze!
But a peaceable, pioneer fella was Dan When he smiled all the ice would thaw! The singin'est, laughin'est, happiest man The frontier ever saw!
Daniel Boone was a man! Yes, a big man! With a dream of a country that'd Always forever be free!
What a Boone! What a do-er! What a dream-come-er-true-er was he!

Recall when every little boomer boy wanted a coonskin cap? Given to them so they could live the childhood of their father's dream.
unbelievable that someone could be offended by that.

real normal
i learned a real good lesson about raising my voice at someone i.e. yelling to get my point across
cost me quite dearly and that's the undestatement of my lifetime
i would just suggest one thing to my man: if you're trying to persuade someone of something the very most ineffective way of doing it is verbal assault (and that's what yelling is as in assault&battery)
well actually two suggestions the 2nd one being you may not like the consequences of your actions
Reason: rethink

The following are probably the lyrics he was referring to:
Daniel Boone was a man, yes a big man. But the bear was a bigger and he ran like a bleeper up a tree.
Fill in the bleeper. I don't use the term. I learned the song as a child, too, but not from my parents or anyone in my family. Had some really racist neighbors, I think I heard it from them.
That said, I think most of us here agree, the right to not be offended does not exist. What is "offensive" is subjective. I hear and see things I find offensive all the time. So, I get over it.
Soon our free speech will be lost, and people will not just get fired, they will go to jail for "offensive" speech. Speaking of which, I am just assuming here, but that is probably what Ted Nugent meant when he said he would be "in jail or dead" if Obama was re-elected.
