Sprint / HTC Unveils New EVO Phone

HTC unveiled a new phone coming to Sprint in the next couple of months:

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Sprint Nextel, the No.3 U.S. mobile service, is hoping to turn heads next month with the EVO 4G LTE, an HTC Corp phone with an advanced camera, a big screen, a high-speed wireless connection and crisper voice call quality.

While many people have claimed that voice is "dead" in point of fact it is not, and one persistent bug-a-boo with voice quality has been intentional bandwidth "management" by carriers.  CDMA (and W-CDMA) along with GSM carriers have for years "squeezed" voice channels; AT&T for example ran half-rate CODECs basically forever on their GSM voice calls in order to double the available calls they could handle, but at the cost of material voice quality impairment.  CDMA carriers and similar have done the same thing.

The new phone's "high definition" voice quality is likely an LTE-data-based calling enhancement; I've not looked into it yet but it makes sense.  If in fact this is what Sprint and HTC are up to it will be significantly better than what you get now on a mobile voice call and that does matter.

I still use my landline for Blogtalk, for example, and for other times that I actually need to be able to hear the other side (and they me) despite having "unlimited" minutes on my cell.  This is not vanity, it is simply call quality, and I'm on T-Mobile which is the only US carrier that has paid attention to voice call quality in the last decade or so. Unlike AT&T and others they never went to the half-rate CODECs, preferring instead to run full-rate AMR even though it meant their towers could handle fewer calls per cell.

If Sprint has committed to resolving this in favor of voice quality it's a good thing.  The photo features in the new phone are also fairly impressive; multiple exposures with one button press will appeal to many people, especially in a small camera phone where "shake" often ruins a single shot (but one of a series may be good.)

The LTE capability is, of course, also important from a "brand" and "spec" perspective, but I'm less-sold on it in terms of practical application -- unless you're tethering (which Sprint supports), in which case it definitely does matter.

Sprint's stock has barely moved on this, probably due to the influence of the iFanboi craze.  It will be interesting to see how the device plays once launched -- the Evo line in general has been a big seller for Sprint and a driver of their popularity as a carrier.  Advancements in that line and the technology available, especially in voice quality, will continue to add to that appeal.

Disclosure: The author has a speculative long position in Sprint.

Correct me if I'm wrong here, but doesn't voice quality on a CDMA network have a lot to do with how many calls are on a given tower at any particular moment? With CDMA, you can always squeeze one more call onto a tower, at the expense of call quality. Back when I switched from Verizon (CDMA) to AT&T (GSM) in 2006, the call quality on Verizon was positively atrocious much of the time around here, while AT&T's wasn't fantastic, it was noticeably less variable.

I've been a Sprint customer for years. The Evo is a great product! HTC has built a quality phone that my teenagers have been unable to destroy in less than a year. We have 3 EVO 4g's in the house, soon to be 4 when I give my daughter mine and purchase this new EVO. Question, this is an LTE phone and I live in an area not likely on Sprints immediate upgarde list to LTE. Will it work in non LTE areas?

Maybe: Yes. It will fall back to Sprint's existing 3g infrastructure if not in an LTE area. Depending on the bands that are in it you MAY be able to connect to Verizon's LTE infrastructure (Sprint and Verizon have some roaming access across one another's towers); I don't have a clean indication on that yet.

Being an HTC device history says it may not however and may only connect on 3g to partners; the only manufacturer to consistently include hardware capability in this regard that is not advertised is Samsung (their entire Galaxy line for T-Mobile going all the way back to the original Vibrant will in fact talk on AT&T UMTS frequencies although they DO NOT advertise this and in fact it's shut off by default but can be enabled in the service menus quite easily.)

I wish they'd throw a bone to those of us who like physical qwerty keyboards on a smart phone, I see no upgrade paths from the Epic 4G, which at nearly two years old is a dinosaur at the rate phones are updated.

I ended up buying an unlocked Nokia C6-01 Symbian updated to Anna with a paygo at&t SIM. The voice quality is the best, sounds just like a voice line. Not sure why an at&t contract phone sounds like it does, but their iPhones are just fuzzy and terrible (I'm not upgrading to Belle).

As far as the camera goes, I have a freebie multiple exposure app that works great and has perfect white balance for skin tones, better than any DSLR. Don't have the app name offhand but there's versions for the OSes.

Also been a Sprint customer for years and am impressed with the Evo 4G durability. I am rough as hell with phones. I tend to drop them all the time.

Oddly enough, the one phone I had that has lasted the longest (and still works well, even if its outdated) is a Motorola iC902. It was the last powersource phone they made and my first PTT device. Carried it for 2 years as a police officer and it stood up well, despite having a reputation for the hinge breaking easily.

What made the powersource phones special was that they could utilize the old 800mhz Nextel network for PTT and the regular sprint network for calls. It even had 3g that I tethered often (before sprint locked it down and made it a pay service).

Damn that was a great phone.

Agreed, Seanmiller: HTC makes the most "solid" phones on the market. They're built like tanks. Great case design.

It's too bad the HTC One X will be crippled in the USA. It's quad-core everywhere else, but the US version is only dual-core.

I guess I'm one of the few unlucky ones with the EVO (have had both the EVO 4G and 3D), and have been plagued with hardware problems. Dust under the screen that cant be removed, which I believe leads to phantom taps, turning on GPS reboots phone, etc. I'm not particularly rough with phones (especially with the 3d, since I thought maybe I was too rough with the 4g and thus have always babied the 3D) and so I have to believe it's the hardware. I have toyed with various ROMs and currently run Warm v2.3 on my 3D, which is head and shoulders above the stock ROM.

BTW...I once drove from Cape May, NJ to Boston, streaming Pandora the entire way - and never incurred any buffering....Very Impressive.

Cell coverage in my area (NW NJ) has always been lackluster with Sprint, so I'm hoping for the best going forward. I'll stick with Sprint(AYCE rocks), but never again, HTC.

I'd be very surprised to see them launching a VoLTE device at this point. Verizon has far and away the widest LTE deployment and they are not doing voice over LTE yet.

@Goldmanssack - I have EVO similar problems, but no phantom taps (I have seen those complaints in the fourms though.) Switching back to a regular clam-shell soon. Also 3G/4G are down to 1/3 speed from when it was new in June 2010. It disconnects so often even with a strong signal, I have to use wifi to update any apps. The international call quality is difficult enough that my wife and I use the phone only to say "can you skype right now?" (though it's way better than any landline + calling card we tried.) Also, Sprint quickly canceled me out of the silver member level or whatever the heck it was after using it as an initial selling point, so that I couldn't switch the phone after 12 months. The reason I'll be leaving them in June is due to poor reception at work and at my house, only works reliably at my bay area apartment.

My daughter is still on Virgin and likes it. Excellent voice quality and zero data problems. 3g all the time everywhere we've been.

Our contract is up soon and we're thinking about going with t-mobile (buying our own phones.)

They seem to have the best coverage in the area, and the prices are great as long as you're not using data (which we probably won't be.) The data plans seem a bit restrictive.

Two years with three phones (one of which is a teen boy's), and we've probably not used a gb of data the whole time.

I beat the **** out of my data plan but then again I got their deal with the 5GB bucket and haven't managed to nail it yet, but I've gotten close when on the road and tethering.

@Xorbe - phantom taps suck...I don't know how many times i've almost shared a personal text on facebook. Drunk texting the girlfriend is not something you want on FB smiley

I'm thinking Samsung or Motorola now, but I've heard that the Motorolas are a pain in the ass to root - So I'm leaning towards Samsung.

I was on their Premier plan, which they quickly cancelled merely months into it. I live and die by text (send thousands per month sometimes) and so I have to stay with someone with a good plan.

Hard to go wrong with Samsung. I have several of their android devices and I've been pleased with them all. The Galaxy S II is the best to date IMHO. That said, I still give the edge to the iphone for most consumers due to the app selection, the interface with itunes, and the new cloudsync offer. 99% of people are not too tech savvy and IMHO benefit from the Apple approach over Android right now.

Funny I have no idea. I put it in my golf bag, it road 18 holes, I got it out and I couldn't see any part of the display. Only under good light can you see the whole display is spidered. Really odd. I've broken others before but this one never hit the ground and you can't see any LCD leak on it. My iPhone 3GS is my bike computer and 2 times it came out of the bracket and hit the asphalt from the handlebars and it didn't break. If I didn't have 20 more options, I'd buy a LCD and fix it.

I have the Samsung Note and a few more but none as nice as the gS2.
