As for the aspartame I think it contributed to my ADHD. I've not had any aspartame in three weeks and my brain seems to be working better every day. But what the **** when you're pumping a gallon a day of Diet Dew into your system who the hell is gonna think straight.

Regarding alcohol - lots of paleo folks prefer tequila since it is not based on grains, potatoes, etc.

Anybody ever try a blood type diet? If so what were your results? Thanks.

Anyone know the guidelines on alcohol?

Here's a good article on alcohol. Take it with a grain if salt, but this guy seemingly has clients with amazing results.

Just curious what filter(s) you use, i.e. Brita, Zero Water, etc.? Something tells me you researched it...

According to the test literature, the Berkey is very, very good at purifying water. Especially if you add the white, heavy-metal filters to the black ones.
Quote:
@Jotapay , I would imagine the distiller route would also remove all fluoride etc from the water as well?

I'm going off of memory here, but the Durastill distiller removes around ~95% of fluroide. Anything that won't volitalize with the steam won't make it through the distillation process. Or any substance whose gaseous state minimum temperature is materially higher than water's generally won't make it through the distillation process (unless it's been volitalized with the steam). Distillation is not perfect at making pure water, thus my inclusion of a second stage filter.

Stumbled across this list of various oils and their characteristics:

http://theconsciouslife.com/omega-3-6-9-....

I've been using "Healthy Choice Smart Balance Omega 3" (canola/oil mix) thinking it was a good choice. Looks like the Omega6:Omega3 ratio of canola is good, but unsure of its other detriments. High omega 6 content, I guess. Ulster now has me thinking about coconut oil/butter. (THANKS) Looks like I'll be doing some studying.

Which is more important the 6:3 ratio or just avoiding omega 6's as much as possible & getting omega 3's elsewhere? Like from fish oil tablets?

Its been cool reading what people do and what works. My own experience lead me to believe the diet stuff here is what it is because its a huge money maker. Think about all the ancillary business that comes from a bad diet here. This really hit me when I spent two months in an eastern european country eating what they eat. Lots of meats, lots of pastries(sorry could not say no) and very little processed. For example for breakfast they eat this pastry that is like a giant pie, loaded with greasy lard on top you see it when they bring it out, its layers of phyllo dough, with ham and cheese interspersed. Its hot, chewy, crunchy and soft all at the same time. You literally have a mouthgasm from it. I could not believe how good this was. I ate this at least 3 times a week, and I had huge portions of it. I also noticed over there that you could not find hfcs in any products other than american soda pop. Most people there were not fat and looked nothing like what you find here. I even lost a good 20 lbs when I was there and was scared to death to eat when I came back here. I did put at least 10 of that back on, even trying to avoid the foods here. It was funny not seeing any weight loss crap, no ads for excercise machines, or any of the nonsense there. I am convinced the food won't change, because its all scammed together into one giant scam, and there is way too much money involved in this for it to happen. I am going back soon and cant wait, I will be there for the whole summer, so I am very excited to see how much weight I can lose by the time I come back, if there is anything to come back too lol.

The rest of us have simply followed the recommended mainstream diet that is low in fat and high in polyunsaturated fats and carbohydrates, not knowing we were causing repeated injury to our blood vessels. This repeated injury creates chronic inflammation leading to heart disease, stroke, diabetes and obesity.

To reiterate, vitamin B6 is instrumental in eliminating homocystine, a metabolite of proteins, that is implicated in causing the inflammation. B6 is destroyed by cooking. If you aren't into sushi, steak tartar, and raw vegies, taking a vitamin B complex supplement is a good idea - something with about 25 mg of each B vitamin. Too much vitamin B can be damaging to the nerves though.

I have been doing this since the late 1970s when I first read about it. At 67 I still run three and a half miles at 8.5 mph (treadmill 1.5% slope) three times a week. I used to run outside with the dog but he is old and arthritic now so even his walks are pretty slow - not much aerobic value.

I have been teased most of my life about how slowly I eat.

Same here. Always the last one eating and built like a rock star. I've been hearing for 10 years now how one day I'm going to wake up and be fat. Well...? I have to work out so as not to be too skinny...

I love butter... unfortunately one of the kids has an allergy to milk, so we tend to use olive oil or funky butter substitute lite.

In a nonstick pan throw down a mixture of Italian cheeses. Mozz/Parm/Prov. Enough to cover the bottom. Add some sausage or mini pepperonis and just a little pizza sauce. Cook until it's light brown on the cheese. Fold it over like an omelet and you've got yourself a little crustless calzone. Takes about 5 minutes.

TMD..that sounds fantastic! Can't wait to try it.

I have currently cut them out of my diet because I'm reducing. But something tells me that the problem with the average American diet usually isn't with the whole wheat bread or the brown rice...

The Berkey filter with both black and white cartridge blows away a Brita type filter.

The Brita type are just a carbon filter. It will take out metals and absorb solvents until the filter is toast. Trouble is telling when that is. Using a calendar or an electronic device that knows how often the pitcher has been tipped is hardly an adequate measure.

Zero water doesn't remove fluoride either.

Monsanto guy,
Why does Monsanto sue to prevent products from being labeled as non-GMO?

Why not just let people make up their own minds?

Not to pick on you, you're just the first person on this forum to admit being employed there. It will be good to hear all sides.

Another thing that causes blood sugar levels to spike in some people is coffee. If you are one that has a cup of coffee on an empty stomach or one that has a cup while sitting around, this can cause blood sugar levels to jump up. For me, I go into a mild fight or flight response when I drink caffeine. The body releases sugars and fats into the bloodstream causing damage to the arteries over time. Of course most doctors won't tell you this. So, I only drink a cup of coffee right before I run.

Mpilar,

My "butter love" began in childhood.

When my brother & I were about 4 & 5 yrs. old, we would each get a stick from the fridge and "hide" under the kitchen table and eat it like an ice cream cone or something. smiley

Don't remember how often we did that. Probably until our mom found out and put a stop to it. lol

I'm now using olive oil and coconut oil more and more, but I can't imagine ever giving up butter. The flavor of good butter is unrivaled, imo. Moderation is key.

"Did Cooking Make Us Human?" {BBC Horizon Documentary - with very interesting insights. I'd have skinned my doctor alive after the damage done by the high fruit and veg diet I was put on, if I had seen this at the time. Yeah, it sucks - screw the 5 a day nonsense, let alone an absolute minimum of 9 a day which was the regime I was put on}

I'm not so sure about the "eating primal" arguments - after all people didn't live very long back then. It doesn't make sense to me to take modern medicines but refuse to eat a salad that had NH3 used as a fertilizer instead of organic cow manure.

Primal isn't about "food re-enactment" but rather more about eating foods that are not processed.

When exactly is "back then"? Over the past 1000 years or so...our average life expectancy hasn't gone up by that much...

People have lived to be 60+ years old for a VERY long time...the thing that lowered the 'average' was dying at a very young age...

Maybe ,but most don't survive their first heart attack.

According to the study, the chance of surviving an out of hospital heart attack long enough to be eventually discharged from a hospital is only 7.6%, roughly 1 out of 13.
