ISM Services -- Huh?

It is what it is, as they say....

The report was issued today by Anthony Nieves, C.P.M., CFPM, chair of the Institute for Supply Management™ Non-Manufacturing Business Survey Committee. "The NMI registered 57.3 percent in February, 0.5 percentage point higher than the 56.8 percent registered in January, and indicating continued growth at a faster rate in the non-manufacturing sector.

I don't know where the money is coming from, but the numbers are what they are, and expecting them to be something else doesn't make them change.

I don't know how we got these results, to be frank, especially given the ramp in gas prices, and have to wonder if the hopium game from Obama and his pals is driving people to spend more of what they don't have in the expectation of "happy days around the corner."

Whatever is in the water (or air) that prompted this, it certainly is positive considering that I was expecting something much-more-muted -- especially given the manufacturing ISM report and other economic reports that have been quite muted.

It'll be interesting to see what comes from the NFP report on Friday, given this and the embedded employment figures.

The data coming out from the government and 3rd party sources leaves you no room to get a proper sense of what is really going on.

Oh yes you do.

The U.S. government has a technology, called a printing press (or, today, its electronic equivalent), that allows it to produce as many U.S. dollars as it wishes at essentially no cost. By increasing the number of U.S. dollars in circulation, or even by credibly threatening to do so, the U.S. government can also reduce the value of a dollar in terms of goods and services, which is equivalent to raising the prices in dollars of those goods and services. We conclude that, under a paper-money system, a determined government can always generate higher spending and hence positive inflation.

You're confusing money and value.

Anecdotal - I picked up two largish multi-year projects this week alone. My personal economy is looking better than it has in 3 years smiley

I'm looking for Android programmers and a C++/PHP programmer in Utah, things only keep getting crazier here as well. It feels real to me.

Pumping out kids doesn't create programming jobs. These are actually California overflow jobs. Besides, think Skiing, Hang Gliding, Trail Running - best place on the planet for outdoor types.

The need for programmers in Utah makes sense because anyone with a brain is getting out of CA. Business looks sporatic here. Hot one week, cold the next. Converting bonds to movable cash merely creates more asset bubbles. I'm guessing the ISM can be messed with. You just quit calling the negatives and call someone else, a process of elimination. They were talking about margin compression on CNBS and the lack of actual business expansion with profits coming from prior margin expansion. In any case, with Europe and potentially China going in the tank, they can always say no one saw it coming or just blame it on the outside the USA economy. I wonder what they are going to blame the collapse on? They didn't spend enough money?

I just retired from UCLA and my 35+ career as a software engineer and am moving from So Cal to Utah in April. I continue to develop my own code of interest at home, when I want to devote the time to it, and on my own schedule, but I can't physically handle sitting in front of a computer all day any more. It's just not healthy.

A former coworker at UCLA quit just before I retired and took a job with a transit agency in Marina Del Rey in So Cal. My guess is his new job is basically funded with delayed porkulus money for transportation security (and to some degree, at my former job at UCLA, some recent equipment and upgrades were funded by porkulus money).

I just paid the most I ever paid in my life for a tank of gas. My husband and I no longer drive to anything local - he just biked 5 miles to his tax accountant today to avoid driving a car and burning up gas. The last time gas prices climbed this high the economy hit a brick wall, and I expect we'll see one later down the road...

I think it's safe to say that EVERYTHING is an illusion at the point. I've pretty much reached the point where I don't believe a word I hear on TV/Radio/Internet anymore. What is reality and what we PERCEIVE to be reality are two different things. Frankly Karl, I'm past the point of even caring anymore. What happens happens.
