Kindle Fire for me... arrives tomorrow...Netflix done( they're toast, Amazon's gonna get that market) combined with Amazon Cloud and Prime made this the best value for me... can't wait, need some DVD software to convert to Kindle and 4GB means small storage... BUT... wi-fi makes this very attractive...

Gen... can you hook your playbook up to a tv with a hdmi connector? Besides the Skype thing, that was the other issue I've been thinking about when shopping for a tablet for my parents. They would love to have a unit they can bring over to their friends and show "cute" family pictures on the television

Soros: Yes, and it is ****ing incredible. You need a micro-HDMI cable (for the Playbook) to do so which is not included. Audio routes as well.

Video playback on my TV is insanely good.

The playbook is unbeatable in many ways... the hardware is excellent! I love qnx. The only downside is openness. Google pulled a 'microsoft' move on them. I think the solution is effective segmentation. They need to lock down everything for markets they own (government, serious biz, etc), but allow another culture for other memes. That flies in the face of reuse objectives but this is marketing 101. Let them eat cake!

Full disclosure: typing this on a rooted nook color running cm7 and an ics theme... :)

All the talk about RIMM going under has me leery about purchasing one of their products. About all I would use it for is media consumption, if I can't root it, no big deal I guess. Root access just gives you access to Android's marketplace, right? That is, IF this didn't run QNX.

Root access potentially gives you access to a lot more, but at the moment the big attraction is being able to sideload things -- in this case GAAPS, which gets you market access.

Why dont they just ship the device with a super user setting buried in it? I dont understand why companies dont offer a version of their device with su ability. customer is going to pay the same for it anyway.

In general you cannot record from an HDMI stream coming from a given device if it has copyright data encoded in it, as the devices involved will forbid it.

There are ways around this however...

I am interested in an e-reader. I have nothing now. Was looking at Kindle. This seems to be much better than Kindle for about the same price. What does this device use for reading books? Could I get free books from the library to this device, could I get Amazon Kindle books to this device whether free or paid for?

Thanks for someone answering this question.

It sounds like there is a BAR file for kindle. I am just learning about all this (i ordered a 32mb playbook today from newegg). It takes a little research but I think it can upload converted BAR apps in the developmental side of the OS.
Again I am just trying to learn this stuff, i am by no means a software person.

I am curious what a TF forum thread looks like on the 7" screen.....

I don't really get the point of a 7" device, particularly one with only 1024x600 resolution, when I already have a 5.3" phone with a 1280x800 screen, and I have it with me at all times. smiley

Agree uwe. I think with the right phone, another device doesn't make sense until you get to 9 inches. In my line of work I get nearly every new device launched so I can pick almost any combo out of my desk. When I travel 1 day or less I carry a Samsung Galaxy S II and an iPad. When I'm gone for more than one day, I also carry my laptop. Anywhere else I only have the Galaxy.

Android sucks for text edit so I use my iPad around the house for that when i can..like for this post. 5 is big enough for a phone IMHO. I have no use for 5+ to <9. It just seems like a useless size for me.

I respect that everyone is different and will have their own opinion.

Anyone having trouble with App World?

I get an error message that it is having trouble connecting to the server anytime I try and download an app.

Well I wiped this ****er a third time and still couldn't get any apps to load or update in App World. I finally had the thought that maybe there was a problem with the BlackBerry account that I created when I set up the device.

Based on this, I decided to do a FOURTH reset and this time set up a new BB account using a second email address. After this App World works fine. Now on to bluetooth tethering...I have tried to set this up with my VZW Galaxy Nexus and I haven't had any luck. I am on a tethering plan and can set up bluetooth tethering between a Mac and the phone.

This has been the furthest thing from an Apple-like experience so far, but what can I say, my love affair with Apple is over these days. I'm willing to put up with quite a bit of **** for something that cost $199 and is not made in China. smiley

I'm very happy with mine. I've sideloaded a few Android apps, Amazon Kindle being one of them. The OS on this thing is very robust, it is really a step above what's available on most consumer devices in my opinion.

I've given up on getting bluetooth tethering working for now, but I can get out using the Wi-Fi hotspot on my phone.

Both the wife and I sold our iPads on Craigslist for $400 each. Suckerz!!

I've had mine sitting on my desk now, turned on, since Sunday without charging it. It has gotten very little use -- my intent is to see what the standby drain looks like.

Answer: I turned it on Sunday night at 94%. It now has 75% left. 3-1/2 days later, and it has burned 20% of the power with light use (played with it a bit, but I'd say it's basically entirely idle.)

I don't have a comparison against other tablets on this, but I'll bet the other devices out there can't get to this sort of battery life, and you don't need to push a button to wake it up either -- just swipe the screen and it's "alive."

Pretty cool.
