Oh that commercial is hilarious, very professionally done. There were some very well acted, "long, sad" faces in that commercial. Loved it, but our society is brainwashed into believing that the college degree will lead to the American dream. Note many of the TFers that are still intent on saving enough so that their precious chilluns can go to college? They don't understand that they will never be able to keep up with inflation in order to send their precious chilluns to college in 2022 (if we are still intact as a country by then) but that won't stop them from trying.

Crap...the SonicWall filter at work stopped the video from appearing. I'll have to see if I can get to it on my iPhone.

Edit: Success! Video was hilarious and sad all at the same time. Our kids would do so much better to learn real financial stuff beyond how to balance a checkbook...you know, like how debt works and when/when not to use it, how/how much to save or invest. I could have started off so much better if I had had this kind of financial knowledge before accepting that first credit card offer.

The ultimate irony is that the video was paid for by a government sponsored entity (New York State Lotto).

I just showed this video to a co-worker that told me his sister recently saved enough money to pay off one of her loans. Apparently one was a government loan that she didn't pay interest on (well, at least not directly) and the other was a loan she was paying interest on.

She called up the loan officer and he convinced her to use the money to pay off the government loan first, rather than the one she was paying interest on because according to him it didn't matter and wouldn't save her money to pay off the interest bearing loan first.

Shortly after she realized the mistake and talked with her school councilor about it, who said that he has been hearing many similar complaints.

WTF!

Now that they are starting to realize that college debt is an anchor that will drag them down, maybe, just maybe this generation of students will be the first to start taking higher education seriously.

There it is; an official government commercial that effectively says the only way out is to hit it big at the gambling table. Let that sink in hard.

Not to mention who they are "targeting" to spend even more money that they don't have - on the lottery.

While this is funny, it won't be very funny for those of us who end up paying for all this profligate BS. I am sure a student loan debt bailout is in the works, we can't have anyone in the US actually take responsibility for themselves now can we?

THIS IS NOT A COMMERCIAL.

IT IS NOT AN AD FOR THE LOTTERY.

IT IS A JOKE.

IT IS FROM COLLEGEHUMOR.COM
-- a comedy website.

It has nothing to do with the lottery other than that being part of the joke.

The fact that half the responders in this thread completely missed that honestly makes me question most of their other posts, too.

As Karl has taught me, the thing that needs to be done is to make student loans eligible to be discharged in bankruptcy. If the Republicans in congress weren't too STOOOPID to understand the issue, they could see that making that change would pop the education bubble, and they would have common cause with OWS footsoldiers in pushing the change through. The Elizabeth Warrens of the world would skulk out from the shadows to testify about how allowing student loans to be discharged would be very very bad and that her testimony is in no way influenced by her getting paid $500k/year by Hahvard to teach two hours a week.

Oh well, we're so screwed it probably doesn't matter. It's like finding out you have leukemia when you already have pancreatic cancer.

No. Our society is brainwashed into believing anyone who wants to go to college ought to be able to without regard to merit or geography or ability to pay.

All the world's knowledge is on YouTube and Wikipedia for anyone who wants it. Teach our kids to read and write and turn them loose after that.

Formalized schooling is (un)officially dated. How can parents and kids be so foolish as to continue to pay tuition?!

No, our system has dumbed down education so much that a college degree is no better than a high school degree was in, say, 2000. And employers know that, which is why even the counter help at Hertz Rent-A-Car now have college degrees.

My kid in her last year of "high school" started community college at age 17 with two courses, one of them being the notorious "composition" class. The first class, the prof, who was a 60+ yo old-timer, had each student write a one page essay on a topic of their own choice, just to get a feel for what the student knew and how they thought. She, of course, having had her mother's rigorous grammar and writing edicts drilled into her for years, had her paper returned with no corrections and a grade of 100 on mechanics, structure, vocabulary etc. He pulled my kid aside at the earliest opportunity, shook her hand, and asked where she had learned to write, as he hadn't had a kid of her skills go thru his class in years. (Heh, chalk one up to homeschooling...) She then became his TA for the rest of the semester. She said the general writing level was so bad it had to be seen to be believed, which is pretty astonishing considering that every school district in the area spends in excess of 15k/year per kid.

My SO manages retail... She was training a "manager" who was in her second year of college to ... hell, I dunno what it was called, but to be a retail manager. (yes, believe it or not, you can get a 2 year degree in that.)

She couldn't make change. She also didn't know how to sweep. That's no bull****. My SO had to teach her how to use a broom. She said "I never had to before, my mom always did that kind of stuff."

SERIOUSLY.

She quit in less than a week and went back to college to finish her "degree."
