Another Day, Still All Lies

Another day of lies has dawned on the markets.

After being up close to 2% the market is now bleeding again with the S&P threatening to go negative and the Nasdaq down into red territory.

The culprit?  The continuation of lies.

Roughly 20% of Italian debt is held by French banks.  And they, of course, are almost-certainly marking that debt to fantasy prices.

Apple is getting cored as the claimed "we'll be on top of the world forever" crap is turning out to be more than a bit vapid.  Green Mountain got destroyed last night with allegations of "aggressive accounting" (or worse) being thrown around for some time; they had an inadequate response on their call last night and detonated.

The entire damn world is full of Ponzi and nobody is facing reality.  If we don't cut this crap out the rout you saw yesterday is going to look like a Girl Scout picnic.

There is nothing -- literally nothing in the form of leadership showing up from anywhere in any of the international leadership.  The French 10 year yield is now spiking and the spread against Bunds has widened by 12% today.

The ECB appears to have been playing "aggressive buyer" but this will not work.  It can't work.  You cannot solve a debt problem with more credit; you must stop the excessive spending!

Last night I saw the most outrageous display of political bull**** and pandering I've been witness to in decades.  The Rethuglicans simply cannot bring themselves to speak the truth.  While I heard "excessive spending" a few times nobody is talking about nor will they talk about where it's coming from -- the large budget items and the only ones that matter are all entitlements and defense!

Go ahead and argue with the facts if you want but you're a buffoon if you do.  The fact of the matter is that Social Security, Defense, Unemployment/Welfare/Etc, Medicare, Medicaid, Interest and Health and Human Services are fully 3/4 of the federal budget.

We're well over a trillion in the hole meaning that you could cut everything from that point downward in that chart to zero and the budget would not be balanced.

There is no solution that does not involve addressing the "Big Five": Social Security, Defense, Unemployment/Welfare, Medicare and Medicaid.

Period.

Now you can dislike this all you want but you can't change it.  Nor can you argue that cutting Defense along will make a material impact on the whole or bring us "balance."  How much would you cut defense by?  Let's say 50% - about $350 billion worth.  That's nice; we're still more than a trillion in the hole!

Put a different way those "big five" plus interest consume all of the tax revenues that the government takes in.

Deal with facts folks.  I don't care if you like them or not; that's not material.  We call them facts for that reason; it is immaterial if you find the facts savory or distasteful -- they just are.

I have seen nothing from any of the Republican Candidates that have made sense in this regard.  Not even Ron Paul, who said he'd cut $1 trillion -- but he didn't say how and someone needs to ask him that before they blow him again with claims that he has a real solution, because the above chart makes clear that if you were to cut $1 trillion from the budget you'd have to basically zero everything other than entitlements were you to cut defense in half to achieve his numbers.  What he's put forward in public (in the form of "block grants") are lies since all that does is shift spending and thus taxing demands from one place to another.  This is raw douchebaggery and those who support this crap without calling it out as what it is are blind partisans.

Bald claims such as anything counted in "block grants" must be deemed knowing and intentional lies when put against the above chart because they are.  Cost-shifts from the federal government to the states are not reductions in spending - they're simply a shift of where taxation has to happen from one place to another and thus are also dishonest.

We are watching the spiral downward in Europe as they simply will not accept that the government cannot spend that which the people will not fund with current tax revenues.  This reality is coming here ladies and gentlemen in the very near future and we can either face it or we will suffer a ruinous financial collapse.

Those on the other side of the issue often ask "but won't we collapse anyway if we do the right thing?"

The answer is no.  The raw damage cannot be avoided but there are mitigating steps we can take in tax policy, immigration policy, trade policy, energy policy and reform of the medical and banking industries that will help.  They will not make the pain go away and they will not stop the damage from occurring but they can prevent the damage from being catastrophic.

The problem is that in order to do any of them we have to stop pretending that this is all someone else's problem, that Medicare will be "as promised" for everyone 50 and older and that the government can continue to run on that chart above while we're going to "make a serious dent in the deficit." The truth is that we are refusing to actually reduce spending (not cut from a "baseline increase") in those five major programs.

We either act now or the choices will be made for us.

And then, on top of all this crap, we find out the extent to which the US Military is now infused with counterfeit parts, sanded down recycled chips imported from China.

Just once, it'd be nice to read a story where some part of our society was not utterly infected with complete and total fraud.

^^^^^^^^^

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin (D-Mich) just dropped a couple of very alarming tales during a hearing about counterfeit parts making their way into brand new U.S. military weapons.

Earlier this year, Boeing and the Navy found that the ice detection system on a brand new P-8 Poseidon was defective. The ice detection system is a critical piece of hardware designed to prevent tragedies by alerting pilots to the presence of ice on an aircraft’s control surfaces. Where did this defective part come from? China. A whole batch of a key piece of the ice detection hardware that was sent to the P-8 production line turned out to be used and worn out parts that were badly refurbished and sold to P-8 subcontractor BAE Systems as a new part, according to Levin. Boeing and BAE first became aware of the problem in 2009, he added.

The fake P-8 parts are just one of many examples of how counterfeit parts — often made from 1980s and 1990s-vintage junk computer parts that are sanded down and remarked in China and then sold back to the U.S. as brand new computer chips for advanced weapons systems. One witness at the hearing just described growing counterfiet semiconductors seeping into critical weapons systems as “ticking time bombs.”

Absolutely true, unfortunately.

And I say "unfortunately" principally because one of these dopes - or Obama (guffaw) - is going to be inaugurated on one fine day in mid-January of 2013. (Assuming we make it that long before The Big Bang Part II, that is.)

Gamma: We are being attacked by China on all fronts other than by direct military force. Between the hacking, currency manipulation, environmental arbitrage, theft of intellectual property, and counterfeit semiconductors used in weapons systems, these are acts of war. We will not fight back because we are addicted to debt and they are more than willing to buy it as they hollow us out. We can't fix the China problem until we fix the spending problem.

The only person I heard last night that made sense - the ONLY intelligent comment on-balance - was from Gingrich!

And well, you know what I think of him generally, right?

Gamma. Easiest way to subvert a military capability. Couldn't have done it better myself. Kudos to everyone in charge who oversaw the implementation of such a thing.

Only one supplier that is actively going after the military semiconductor market here in the US.
http://www.lansdale.com/

They buy the rights to what is "obsolete" and the big manufacturers discontinue. Most of the other manufacturers are overseas.

A few good articles there to read if you are interested.

How do we tackle the Social Security problem? I now draw SS, so I have a vested interest.

I read that our $15T in national debt contains $2.6T of Social Security Trust Fund bonds. The argument is that borrowing money to redeem the trust fund bonds does not increase the national debt. It merely changes government-held trust fund debt to publically-held debt. This is why some people claim that there is no problem with Social Security until 2041.

I am trying to get my mind around this issue. Should the government simply repudiate the SS Trust Fund Bonds and thereby lower the national debt by $2.6T? I know this a politically undoable, but would this not allow us to deal with the problem honestly and above-the-board?

Sorry if this question makes me look ignorant, but I guess I am.

As I said in another thread, even if they raise taxes, How the **** are they supposed to pay for this stuff?

You've got cash flowing out with the trade deficit never to return with our current production, and you have the financial squids siphoning ever larger sums from the bottom. The squids will magically get tax exemptions, and the bottom has less disposable income.

So who/how is going to pay this ****?

Mg, the problem is that they are CUTTING payroll taxes, which is simply shifts forward the problem.

Social Security is fixable. Medicare, however, is not. The problem there isn't Medicare (and Medicaid) it's the medical SYSTEM. It is not possible to fix either program so long as the current system's structure persists, and Obamacare made it worse, not better.

Hell, the squid even makes money off of the food stamp program.

Just the fact that we ship manufacturing overseas to a "potential" enemy is in and of itself a glaring example of just how far in the wrong direction "off shoring" has gone.

Replacement of critical infrastructure and parts to keep our country up and running (transformers) Gone!

It's a ****ing joke, a really bad joke.

Like an avalanche, it's impossible to stop now. The only thing we can collectively do is wait for the impact. There is not one single elected official I can see that is shouting from the roof tops to stop this destruction from the inside out (top down I should say) of our Republic.

Edit: Bill Still has not been elected (yet) so I can't count him as a politician.

Government is not the solution; it's the janitor...

After the country pukes it's financial guts out, then the politicians will really deal with the problem...as it stands now, no one wants to be the one to push the reset button and send the world into a depression...so they will wait until it happens "naturally" and "no one" is to blame as it could not be foreseen...

Has ANY politicial ever consulted you for advice? I'm just curious if we have any political leaders that are smart enough to at least put their experts in a room with you, you guys have it out, and the politician decides. If I were a politician, I would do so.

Well, I'm assisting two politicians right now who are running active campaigns, both Libertarians, so yes. Bill Still and Calen Fretts.

When it comes to political figures if and when I assist it's up to them when that becomes public, of course, since it's their campaign (or office) that's at issue. I may or may not have in the past or be currently assisting others (read into that what you will.)
