Ron Paul Unveils $1 Trillion In ACTUAL Cuts

Hmmm...

Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Monday laid out an economic plan that would lower corporate and individual taxes and cut federal spending by $1 trillion during his first year in office, achieved partly by eliminating five cabinet-level departments.

Mr. Paul, a longtime Texas congressman, said he would close the departments of Education, Energy, Commerce, Interior and Housing and Urban Development, as part of a broader plan to cut federal spending. The federal work force would be cut by 10%. Mr. Paul also called for stopping foreign aid and "ending foreign wars.''

Now that is cutting spending.

It also likely has the media power and public acceptance of about 3% of the population, because doing so will instantly collapse the entire ponzi game that has been run for the last 30 years.

It needs to happen too.

But it won't.

Nonetheless, I do give Mr. Paul credit for putting it forward and actually saying what needs to be said in this area.

And while turning Social Security and Medicare into programs that people can "opt out" of sounds good, neither step does anything about the promises made that cannot be kept.  So.... what's the plan there and how do we avoid the boomer blowup problem?  (Incidentally, again for those who missed it the last time, if we assume a current cost of medical insurance for a healthy 50 year old of $600 monthly, by the time he turns 85 at current cost escalation rates that policy costs about $12,000 - per month - or nearly $150,000 a year!)

The fail in this plan is that it does not address the 900lb Gorilla in the China Shop, which is the medical system.

That has to be fixed or the rest simply doesn't matter and Ron Paul, like the rest, fails to address it, moving part of it to the States (sorry, shifting dollars doesn't address the problem) and doing nothing of materiality with the rest.

The plan is, however, a start.

This is the closest thing to a solution that I have seen from a politician to date. It will be interesting at upcoming debates to hear other R candidates bash this proposal.

This is why Ron Paul is sorely needed. Just bringing it up forces people to face facts and when they see the opposition tongue tied, lying to combat the truth coming out of RP it will be obvious to the people who is a real man and who isn't.

One way to end Medicare, while keeping some semblance of the the promise to people who have relied on it is to create a government funded clinics with funding limited to the Medicare tax. Medicare recipients can go there and get free (rationed) care.

Paul is finished; time for him stock up on bird seeds and kick the bums off his favorite park bench.

Proposing real solutions to real problems is not what the majority want to hear; they want the easy way out...offer them gain without pain and you'll win every time...

It's the best plan I've seen so far. It is a start.

After all of the bashing that Rush Limbaugh has done to Ron Paul, for him to actually come out and say that this is exactly the type of plan that is needed and it's what the people need to hear, that's saying something.

Maybe with these cuts in spending we can have a Fair Tax of only 10% and not 23%. That would be the ultimate.

Unfortunately I fear you're right.

What he should have led with is my exponent ticker. You have to show people why what they're demanding will make the situation WORSE, NOT BETTER, or they won't stop demanding it!

He hasn't done that, and worse, he left along the big Ponzi machine (medicare) that is at the root of the budget problem.

He saw the success with the Cain 999 plan. People want some definitive plans and answers.

As far as Medicare goes, Kyle Bass said Medicare Part D must go, period. No way to pay for it.

Here's a link that specifies some of the other cuts:

http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/201....

Quote:
Under a Paul presidency the departments of Energy, Education, Housing and Urban Development, Commerce and Interior would cease to exist. Their elimination would slice about $179 billion from the federal budget and cut about 134,000 federal jobs.

Paul said his plan would not lay people off, but would transfer them to other departments until they retire.

Paul would slash funding for the remaining departments, including a 40 percent cut for the Food and Drug Administration and a 30 percent budget reduction for the EPA. The Department of Defense would see $832 billion disappear from its budget during Paul’s first term in office, most of which would stem from Paul’s plan to end all foreign wars and foreign aid.

I'm ok with all that, the only part I'm a bit leery of is this

Quote:
Paul also eliminates taxes on profits earned overseas and brought back into the country, as would Cain and Romney.

The Joint Committee on Taxation estimates this tax holiday on repatriated profits would give an initial boost to the economy but would cost the federal government $79 billion over the next decade in lost revenue.

Chuck Marr, the director of federal tax policy at the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities, said a tax holiday for foreign profits, which was temporarily implemented in 2008, is “grossly unfair” because it rewards companies who locate overseas.

“It amounts to a new incentive to shift money overseas,” Marr said. “You’re basically saying to companies overseas that are special don’t have to pay taxes.”

The article does not mention with what he proposes to replace the gutted departments.
It also states later on the he wants to repeal “...last year’s Wall Street regulatory law and the 2002 Sarbanes-Oxley Act”.

This can’t be seriously considered?

That's $200ish billion a year? That doesn't cover what he said he was going to do - it's closer to $350. There's some weaseling going on here somewhere.

There is a theory out there that very large pools of money (in foundations and trusts) are not comfortable with the recklessness of wall street, DC, and the big banks and are worried enough about things to actually help Ron Paul get his way.

Wine, those depts shouldn't have existed to begin with. There's no need to replace any of them with anything.

As for Dodd - Frank and SOX, those are horrible laws. SOX alone costs my company a ton of money to comply with and I've never seen anyone prosecuted for violating it.

We have dozens of regulatory agencies to oversee what Dodd-Frank and SOX do.. yet none of them do their jobs or enforce any regulations. It's just another scam.

At least someone has the guts to put a real cutting plan out there. I have a feeling there's more to come from Ron, esp. in the way of Medicare. He's been a proponent of trying to at least honor the "deal" we made with SS and Medicare.. .but even he realizes we can't. It's a start.

How about nothing?
Dept of Ed? Should be left up to the states.
Energy? What good have they done us? Ever. Seen any benefits from them? I haven't.

Dept of Commerce? hahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahaahahahahahaa

FDA, sold out during Shrubs term, they're a mouthpiece for Pharma

While he's handing out haircuts, how about Dept of Ag.

I'd rather see Homeland Security either dissolved, or at least rolled into National Guard, where it rightfully belongs if we feel it must "stay".

HUD.....splat.

So much more to trim too.

Lots more.

Not without an actual sustainable economic policy. This is a nice step but it's not there.

Paul's close to winning back my primary vote with this plan. Now if he says something along the lines of "stop the looting, start the prosecuting", then I'm all in.

Too bad he's got virtually no chance at the GOP nomination. Ah well, it'll give me one last chance to vote my principles before I set fire to my voter registration card.

I don’t agree with your statement in its entirety. For starters, I will have a difficult time supporting a candidate who wishes to eliminate the Department of Education. This is one area where this country needs to increase investment significantly. Roughly 2% of the Federal Budget is allocated to Education. This simply put is pathetic. In its current form the Department of Education is broken and is a failing our children. I find Paul’s statement akin to giving up and throwing his hands up in the air in defeat. This is not a leader I want for this country. Paul should be advocating gutting, revamping, and reinvesting in the Department of Education so that our children are better educated and prepared.

It will always be broken. Bureaucrats that are 3000 miles removed from what is happening in classrooms will never fix anything.
