ADP / Challenger: Whassup In There?

Hmmm.....

Employment in the U.S. nonfarm private business sector increased by 91,000 from August to September on a seasonally adjusted basis, according to the latest ADP National Employment Report ® released today. The estimated advance in employment from July to August was revised down only slightly to 89,000 from the initially reported 91,000.

Remember, last month they reported 91,000 too, but the NFP came in with a big fat goose-egg.

Here's the problem in this report: The entire gain was in the "service" sector.  You know, doing things like pulling coffees?  Yep.

There was no gain in construction, and the entire gain in services was in small and medium-sized business.  This means that banksters weren't gaining jobs, which is good.  However, the jobs that were gained were probably low-paying, which is bad.

What I like even less is the Challenger report, which shows planned layoffs - it's spiking.  Coming into the holiday season this is decidedly negative and definitely marks something to watch.

On the NFP side for Friday I'm going to impute a small bump from last week's decline in claims, and call +50,000.  However, if the Challenger report is real next month will be red.

We'll see how long it takes before the markets reacts to that -- or if it does.

Karl the IEC was admitted to have had flaws, am I missing something? Is it fair to estimate the coming jobs number off of a hyper-flawed statistic?

Seriously, where are all these "private sector" jobs being created? Unless they're talking about my 16-year old who just got a job as a hostess at the local Texas Roadhouse steak-house, that is.

Doesn't seasonally adjusted mean add or subtract as needed.

"The entire gain was in the "service" sector. You know, doing things like pulling coffees?"

Not all service jobs are as low skilled as 'pulling coffees'. An auto mechanic is a service job requiring a good deal of skill. So is a computer programming job if it involves debugging and fixing previously written code. Repairing anything is a service job and many such jobs require a good deal of intelligence. And what about companies that drill for oil under contract to oil producers? Aren't these service employees also? We should not knock all service employees as 'waitresses' or 'coffee pullers'.

I don't KD is knocking these type service jobs; in fact he did a ticker where mentioned the need for many people to be learning these skills rather than going to college.

I consider all "seasonal adjustments" as suspect. I suspect the ADP seasonal adjustments are as flawed as the BLS's.

If I were a motivated individual, I would look at raw data, which you hardly ever see in the media. But my attention span...oh, look! Shiny!

Peteb: I think your point is valid, further, I suspect pretty much most of the data supplied by the government; if one just considers the way the inflation rate is calculated, that is omitting food & energy (items everyone needs on a daily basis), it is seriously flawed. Government & truth seem to be contradictory terms. Cheers.

Well there is the point that with globalization there would be fewer jobs in the US even without asset bubbles, Ponzi financial hype, and all the educational/medical/military/govt. tick bird scammers who have captured the US government. The rest of the crap makes it worse, but the US consumer is looking at the wrong end of a gun, because sooner or later the US consumer will run out of assets to sell, and debt to run up.

Oil field stuff is under mining. The parts of the economy that need to be constantly refilled will do okay. Doesn't look like we are going to have a backlog of oil in the US any time soon.

Wootendw, your assertion is not supported by the facts. The simple facts are these. Manufacturing jobs have been, and are, in precipitous decline. In addition, the percentage of low paying jobs to middle income jobs has been increasing (I.e. more low paying and less middle income): http://static8.businessinsider.com/image.... . It is hardly a reach to suggest that the jobs being created are low end jobs like Starbucks barristers, hairdressers, Walmart greeters, etc. America is experiencing a long term structural decline. If the debt/leverage dilemna is not resolved ALONG WITH the structural problems with the way the economy is otherwise organized, the future is going to look extremely screwed for the VAST majority of Americans. At this rate, the next generation is all but completely screwed.
