Income And Spend: Huh?

Hmmm...

Personal income increased $36.2 billion, or 0.3 percent, and disposable personal income (DPI) increased $29.2 billion, or 0.2 percent, in May, according to the Bureau of Economic Analysis. Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $4.6 billion, or less than 0.1 percent.  In April, personal income increased $37.7 billion, or 0.3 percent, DPI increased $27.9 billion, or 0.2 percent, and PCE increased $28.8 billion, or 0.3 percent, based on revised estimates.

Ok, that sounds fairly reasonable.  So where did it come from?

Private wage and salary disbursements increased $14.1 billion in May, compared with an increase of $26.4 billion in April.

Uh.....

Proprietors' income decreased $1.7 billion in May, in contrast to an increase of $3.2 billion in April. Farm proprietors' income decreased $1.3 billion, the same decrease as in April.  Nonfarm proprietors'  income decreased $0.4 billion in May, in contrast to an increase of $4.5 billion in April.

Wait a second here.... where did it come from?

Personal current transfer receipts increased $9.3 billion, in contrast to a decrease of $1.8 billion.

Oh there it is.  The Free **** Army got it's handouts.

Of course the questions are "where did the money come from?" and "is that sustainable?"

Make sure you duck after asking those questions.

Funny story - gf's father is a big anti-gov't guy, staunch Republican, always bashing Obama and Democrats. So, he needs to get into shape or he will die. Gets a gym membership *and* a personal trainer. Who is paying? Medicare.

So, big gov't is bad, gov't medical programs are bad, but he'll gladly use these programs for his own benefit? I see how it is.

If you want to bankrupt someone, you have to make sure he spends more money then he make.

If he makes it easy for you, to make him to spend more, so much the better. I think they should buy him a home gym for the days he don't feel like going to the Gym.

So if "Personal consumption expenditures (PCE) increased $4.6 billion, or less than 0.1 percent," and inflation is running well ahead of 0.1 percent per month, isn't this actually a decrease in personal consumption in terms of units sold? Or am I missing something?

Interesting discussion with a 60s lefty about Ron Paul and Kuchinich's legalization bill. Paul is no good at all, quite evil and dangerous apparently in spite of his hippy aligned freedom agenda because he is not FSA compatible.

FSA friendly trumps EVERYTHING. Hard left or hard right, they gotta have their free **** bennies or their "principals" go right out the window. Torture, abortion, war, taxes, whatever, it's just ****ing window dressing, swill in the bucket that our pig farmers in DC whack a stick against to get the FSA all worked up before every election.

To be fair, people over 65 pretty much have to go on Medicare unless they're wealthy enough to pay in cash. My boss (small business owner) just turned 65 and his doctor told him he has to go on Medicare. He's pretty*****ed about it, and doesn't want any part of it. Anyone have any suggestions I can pass along?

Like discussed before, the largest increase in govt handouts is via Social Security Disability. The definition of disabled is a complete joke and very easy to game. If you have minor children, this program makes welfare worthless. Picture getting your $1200 a month disability check and each of your minor children getting a check for between 50% and 80% of your check. Really is rewarding for large families. In many cases, the spouse also gets a check.
The definition of "disabled" need to be "DISABLED"!. People claim they have reading disorders or back pain. It's insane how easy it is to get on the program with the right doctor.
I get over a dozen emails a week from law firms pushing this. It's the new welfare and pays very well.

Where did the money come from? Why, last month it came from the G- Fund, of course. Hilarious if it weren't tragic. The Public Dole leeches are now sucking from the Public Servant leeches. That's gotta mark the end.

That's because individual liberty is intrinsically incompatible with people getting things for "Free". It's only "Free" because it was taken from someone else to begin with.

There is no reason for the Monday rally. There is only a made up reason.

I was listening to Steve Keen a couple of nights ago. He said he had a source that said the retail sales figures reported by the government the past couple of years had no connection to reality. I have to believe this is true with home equity shrinking, credit debt shrinking and unemployment being high. The all over the place numbers reported in this income report is nothing more than making it up as they go along. What would the swing in FSA receipts be other than tax payments or tax returns? This is almost a dog ate my homework story.

It came from your daughter's future income Karl. You make a big story about the youth being ripped off by a collage education. Graduating with little prospect of jobs and encumbered by the a debt that cannot be dismissed.

When you look at the CIA fact book, it lists every country and the available males capable of military service. Obviously the ones that are too young or too old do not fit their purposes. When I look at a debt per household, I discount the 20% that are on poverty line and primarily exist on government handouts. We will always have approx 20% of households in this condition, with no ability to repay the debt. Like the CIA fact book, I discount the ones that will not amount to being useful for my purpose. After subtracting the dead wood, you are left with about 100 million "capable households".

Assuming your daughter ends up in a capable household, she is currently amassing debt at 15 to 17k per year. She does not need to participate in the collage scam to get ripped off. She is getting ripped off before she is even of legal age and has no say in the matter.

The current crop of adults we have in the USA are so self centered and selfish that they just do not give a damn about the up and coming generation. In short we are saying "Screw the children".

"Good luck trying to collect from her"

Yeah. Feel the same way about my kids.

There will be a default or an exodus of the creative/productive. Those "each person owes $_______" when they're born is misleading - they didn't accrue that debt, don't relate to those that did, and will have no capacity/desire to pay for it.

Along these lines, it's worth reading Tacitus' account of what happened after Nero's death. Those accustomed to profligacy took affront at Galba's (the new emperor) thriftiness - i.e., he didn't give out lots of favors and free stuff to those accustomed to receiving it. And he was assassinated... and then those that came after him were lousy... and also unable to pay... and civil war, riots and more took place until Vespasian paid the important folks off and punished dissenters. And debased the denarius.

So transfer payments in the GDP expenditures number is counted as C not G, eh?

Okay, I suppose, yeah, whatever.

That does make the REAL numbers that the politicos confiscate to keep the FSA paid off easy to calculate. In 2010 the governments' expenditure contributions to GDP were $3 trillion (federal, state and local), while their total spending was $6 trillion.

That's $3 trillion, or 20% of GDP, taken from the productive at gunpoint and handed out to the politically favored AFTER all other expenses.
