Here Comes The Police State

Not content to tax your gasoline purchases, now the government wants to track exactly how far you drive - which, of course, implies tracking exactly where you drive.

The Obama administration has floated a transportation authorization bill that would require the study and implementation of a plan to tax automobile drivers based on how many miles they drive.

....

Among other things, CBO suggested that a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) tax could be tracked by installing electronic equipment on each car to determine how many miles were driven; payment could take place electronically at filling stations.

Oh yeah, that'll go over well.

You do realize, folks, that it's trivially easy to tamper with such a device unless it also stores tracks.  That is, exactly where you drove, not just how far.  And that tampering with such a device would be ridiculously profitable and, if tied to you via your fill-ups, would be effectively anonymous, which would make cheating impossible to prosecute.

Therefore, that couldn't be done.  Therefore, the unit's identity would have to be tied to you, and the path you traveled would have to be stored and maintained in order to validate that you hadn't cheated.

The office would be required to consider four factors in field trials: the capability of states to enforce payment, the reliability of technology, administrative costs, and "user acceptance." The draft does not specify where field trials should begin.

User acceptance eh?  Here's my answer:

When do these ideas of extracting money from Americans any way they can stop?

I think I know the answer.

Yet another proposal that will be instantly embraced and pushed aggressively by the very people in the media and among the "smarter" set who would be screaming to the High Heavens about "the coming police state" were this ludicrous, idiotic idea brought forth by Dubya or the McVain.

What... $5-6/gallon gas isn't enough to financially strangle American workers? Obama has to tax them for commuting to/for their jobs?

Just when I think the idiocy and madness can't get any worse...

Maybe not, Doc. I'm prolly more left than most of the readers/posters on Mr. Denninger's site, but this proposal is tremendously offensive. On an incremental march toward a police state, this constitutes a giant step.

Well then we had better make tampering with such a device a federal offense. There, that'll fix those nasty tax cheats.

Funny... Mine keeps developing these nice .45cal holes in the middle...

Gas tax already taxes you based on mileage and rewards for more efficient vehicles.

I guess when you're a stung out junkie at some point the coke that fell behind the toilet starts to look real good and you find yourself on your hands and knees on some nasty public bathroom floor trying to snort the coke that didn't end up in the puddle of*****...

It never ends well when it gets to that point.

No.
****ing.
Way.

If they want to drum up more money via new taxes, how about transactional taxes on stock trades? That ought to generate a few billion, and maybe shut down some HFT networks in the process.

Naw, the .gov is now a heroin junkie, with nothing left to their name, having blown an AIDS dick for $10, now sitting under a bridge with a discarded needle they found in the park, using***** in the spoon to mix their heroin.

The end usually comes quickly for junkies at this stage.

The tax on gasoline is a per mile tax - not enough for them apparently.

No, they don't want to get blamed for raising the price of gas and they want the ability to track people.

I guess they are hoping "eternal vigilance" gets too tiresome.

They've been trying that in Holland for the past 24 years, still no-go, wonder why they even bother.

Quote:
Netherlands Congestion Pricing Initiatives

The cities of the Randstad region of the Netherlands have considered the implementation of several congestion pricing initiatives since the mid 1990s. These initiatives included cordons and a per-kilometer charge to reduce congestion and raise revenues for transportation infrastructure. However, these congestion pricing initiatives failed to gather enough public support to be implemented. After the failure of these initiatives, surveys were conducted to measure the level of public acceptance for the congestion pricing proposals and to determine the major areas of public concern. The surveys revealed that there was little public support for road pricing due to the general distrust of government, a lack of understanding on how the tolling fees would be determined, and concerns about how the revenues would be used. (TRB, 2005) In addition, the surveys showed that the public did not perceive traffic volume as a major problem; rather, they viewed poor driving habits and the resulting incidents as the major cause of congestion. (TRB, 2005) By failing to demonstrate a need for the congestion pricing schemes as tools to manage congestion rather than as revenue generating mechanisms, the urban areas in the Netherlands have not been able to successfully implement a congestion pricing scheme.

Of course, we all know that the Current Tax Money is not being spent on what it's supposed to be spent on. Hence the need for more and more taxes, ostensibly for the same things.

But the tracking thing? Yeah, that's just a bonus for them.

I purchased a Roketa (Chinese) 250cc motorscooter. It get's 70 mpg, carries 2, and costs $1850 total, brand new, delivered in a crate to your home. It's a new 2008 model (there is a warehouse full of new, 2008's in Cali) with full warranty, bought online. It's a perfect, precision, machine and so far has exceeded my expectations. PM me if you want to know where, how to buy, more info - it's pretty cool, and allows me to give the middle finger to the gas prices and the government trackers to come. Did the government win by forcing me onto a motor scooter - yes, they did, but at least I'm still mobile for short trips, at a price I'm willing to pay!

They'll figure a way around the tampering ... TSA agents at every station, you must scan your driver's licence and car license number in order to get gas, biometric recognition on each pump, etc.

I was just about to post a link to this on the "Tea Party Fail" Ticker, but as usual Karl beat me to it.

The scary part is, the technology for this is not only readily available, in many cases it's already installed. In fact many new car buyers are paying a premium to have it added to their window stickers. All they would need is some wireless technology at the gas stations to download the info from your vehicle's tracking device err, "navigational system".

I'm beginning to question the need for the "Tin Foil Hats" forum, since most of what I used to consider wild conspiratorial paranoia is turning up in "Breaking News" instead.

If they want more $$/mile in taxes there are easier ways to do it - raise gas tax, assess the tax when odometer is read for state-required inspections/registrations/etc.

It's obvious that this is just a (flimsy) excuse to track everyone with the added bonus of handing out contracts to build the trackers/readers. It's also not a new idea:

http://www.accountabilityutah.org/Issues....

the excuse then was that people were driving more efficient cars and the gas tax revenue was going down.

If motorcycles are exempt I may have to renew my endorsement.
