You would think the people they are extorting from would maybe gang up and kill all the 300K. WE the people have been ****ed by our own political system and the ****ers number more than the politicians that helped them. If this is acted upon, I would prefer these culprits be executed by slow mutilation in public, butt naked. Maybe a few real hungry pit bulls and tigers put in a cage with them might do the trick.
We have become a society of blood suckers and these ticks are being pulled of the dog. This is true here and abroad and the western world is sucking itself dry. Unions serve a purpose until their purpose becomes how much blood they can suck out of others. There is absolutely no reason public employees should be compensated on the level they have been compensated. The Republican idea of school vouchers has been fought by these people for a reason. Private schools would have to work and be competitive or they wouldn't survive. We are paying through the nose for failure.
If people knew how much money cops made, the hoods would be lining up for a job instead of being outlaws. I might have been one myself, as you can ride around in a car and chase women all night, which is what a lot of them do between bumps in the road. I ran into one that I knew years ago. I had heard he had made assistant chief. Next time I saw him, he was at a restaurant bar and I mentioned I had heard of his promotion. He said he was retired. He hit 50 and took the money. I would guess his retirement was 6 figures, because this is an upper class town and I know his pay was well in that area. His father was a NYC cop, so I would imagine he knew the game. Dad might have quit before his son got out of high school. Nice to be a public servant and retire a millionaire at 50.

I would think that a computer nimrod like myself could have signed up for an email account with yahoo and then sent it anonymously enough from a public library or a Kinkos or something and never gotten caught. If I was one to do this sort of thing I think I would rather do it by US Mail though as I can't see how they could ever catch me.
I don't doubt that someone might die over this. And somewhere Keith Olberman will probably blame Sarah Palin for it.

As with most universities, many UW-Madison buildings have public pc kiosks with free internet access. No ID login required.

i call BULLSH&T....non of the union members or 'rented' union protestors have been violent. most of the protesters look like 20-something liberals that are not teachers. they also look like a bunch of sissy lady-men. old guard union thugs have necks thicker than their heads.....
we have a long way to go before the effiminant men in this country get physical.
so far all the real 'violence' has been from one-off crazy nerd pear shaped losers...and i dont think they even knew what they were doing (school board shooter and tuscan shooter).
i think the threat email was not to threaten the lawmakers but to cause shock and outrage against who...?

rickysa - (i can only comment twice)...do you really think that 50 year old teachers are going to kill anyone...? this is some kind of ploy to play the media...how i dont know. threats without violence dont work. now if we had people fighting in the street, but to go from obese school teachers and rented liberal pussies to assasinations is too much of a jump...too radical...too fast.
even if the letter is real, i.e. a real person sent it (no political bs) ...they are not the shooter. assasins dont send you a warning note (or thank you notes either!)
crazy people dont warn you...they just lose it and go pop pop pop....this just smacks of some kind of political game.......

Um, free wireless internet somewhere + throw away netbook paid in cash from craigslist w/clean pirate or linux install + throw away e-mail account is much safer that sending a physical envelope or using a public kiosk (possibly video recorded) ... just sayin'!
Anyways, it's anonymous e-mail, presumably. What'cha gonna do? Sounds like hot air begging for attention. I think it's going to take a lot more churn before real violence breaks out. But I don't know.

Has anyone considered the email may have originated from the party being threatened? It wouldn't be the first time such misdirection was used.
Real or not, there are any number of essentially untraceable ways to send such things, known even to non-experts such as me. Even now many wireless networks remain unsecured, thus they may serve as a means for committing one-off criminal acts online with relative safety. With an index.dat wiper/over-writer, or the use of a virtual machine that doesn't store its state, possibly a MAC spoofer, and/or a forensic-proof "shredder" security file eraser, the computer used to send the email would likely contain no trace of the felonious activity. The methods mentioned may be redundant and may overlook some footprint or another, but I never gave it any thought before.

@Tenerre: I have to admit I couldn't stomach watching the protests (other than random clips), and of course I agree with the "50-year-old teacher" analogy (smile), but I did see some pushin' and shovin' along with some fairly vitrolic dialogue between supporters/non-supporters. I believe there may be a group of social anarchists that might hide behind the protests to dial up the heat.
I most certainly don't believe this to be a viable threat, so we beez on the same page (wink).

This letter is so spot-on with what I hear Democrats say about the situation, they really have gotten worked up about it and they really are calling the democratically-elected government a "dictatorship" and they really do think their fat, never-missed-a-meal lardasses have the same grievances as do Egyptians.
