To Wisconsin's Unions: Sit And Spin

Public unions in Wisconsin are protesting having to pay some of their insurance and pension costs out of their own pockets, like the rest of America does.

That's fine.  They're entitled to protest.

The Governor is entitled to fire them all.  And he should do so.

Right now.

There are millions of unemployed Americans.  There is no shortage of people looking for work.  Many of them are qualified to teach.

Teachers protesting at Wisconsin's Capitol Building in Madison shut down schools for a second day Thursday so they could demand collective bargaining rights that they say are essential to keeping kids in school.

Teachers have a fundamental right to free speech.

They do not have a right to a free day off at the taxpayer's expense in order to exercise that right to free speech.

Calling in sick when you're not really sick is a lie.  It is a violation of trust.  It is properly responded to with being dismissed from your position, since you're expected to act honorably in dealing with the students.  Any teacher or administrator who is incapable of acting honorably must be ejected from his or her position and replaced.

The correct solution to this problem is to fire all of the teachers who have called in sick but in fact are not sick.

"Our goal  is not to close schools, but to instead to remain vigilant in our efforts to be heard," said Mary Bell, president of the 98,000-strong Wisconsin Education Association Council.

We can put 98,000 people who wish to work instead of protest to work right now, today.

That's a great deal.  Let those who wish to protest do so.  But let those who wish to work and get paid for a day's work do so.

The State is close to $4 billion in the hole.  Pension funds are bankrupt and have been playing Ponzi for years.  The game's up.  Same with health insurance.  The costs cannot be covered any more at the escalation rate that is taking place.

It has to stop, here and now.

The unions want everyone to pay more taxes.  But we have paid more taxes.  What we haven't gotten for our taxes is better results.  So we're paying for nothing - a pig in a poke.

The money doesn't exist.  Private sector employees have had to suck it up, work harder and get paid less.  There's no way around this - you can't spend what you don't have forever.

The public unions think they're exempt from the laws of mathematics.  They're not.  All they can do is what they're doing - try to hold people up.

It's time to say no and shut them down.

You're free to speak all you want.  You're free to protest.  You're not free to spend the taxpayers money to pay you to protest, and you're not free to lie about the reason you're not showing up for work.

When I ran my company if you lied to me about why you were not coming to work your job was toast.  No ifs, ands, buts or maybes, and no second chances.

Ever.

Either go back to work or get fired and replaced.

End of discussion.

If I were the Wisconsin Gov, I would have my folks going out with video and still cameras, asking for opinions and statements from ALL of the protestors. And get them on camera and on record, with their names and their demands.

Then, go through all the records of those who 'called in sick' - and match them up.

Anyone who matched, would be gone the next day for falsifying government records and filing false claims. Done. Gone. Goodbye.

And NOT rehire anyone in their place - and make the remaining teachers and/or union goons / administrators, take up the slack.

Wash, Rinse, Repeat. Do this till the budget is balanced.

If these teachers are TOO STUPID to NOT show up at a public rally after they have called in sick, they are TOO STUPID to be teaching a welfare broodmare how to spread her legs to birth another welfare check....

I know atleast a dozen teachers (former teachers - just plain out of work teachers) here on Long Island that would move to Wisconsin tomorrow and begin a new career there.

Just say the word.

A quote from the Milwaukee Urinal Sentinel:

Sen. Tim Cullen (D-Janesville) confirmed Thursday that Democrats are boycotting the Senate action on the bill in efforts to block a quorum and keep the measure from passing. Because 20 senators of the 33-member house are needed to be present to pass a fiscal bill, the body's 19 Republicans will not be enough to pass the budget repair bill without at least one Democrat present.

"They can't pass this bill if there's not a Democrat in the chamber," Cullen said.

When the schools are shut down and do not get their daily state aide for each student, who is going to close the gap and cover the short fall in budgets that get broke because of this non-sense?

That is right, the same people who have to pay these clowns to "teach" and that word is used very bravely.

Pathetic.

I will puke if I hear 1 more time that this is all for the students-BS, if it was for the students they would be in class right now instead of the school system being shut down!

They sure seem oblivious to the economic realities that the private sector has been dealing with. I'm sure it has not once dawned on them that they are making demands from me, the taxpayer, to pay for their bonuses and benefits. I'm sure that reality is lost on them.

I think the more frequent they protest so boldly like this, the quicker we will see retailiation on public unions in a big way. We're starting to see it already, but public sector largesse can be pushed to the front page in a very negative way.

Public unions need to be abolished, and for good reason. The perverse incentives that it creates to have strong union interests stuff public offices with their buddies is a structural problem that needs to be completely eradicated so we can have a much more functional government in the future. Let them ride try to ride this gravy train all the way to the front pages.

Yip. The parasites are feeding on themselves now. The public sector was sucked dry in the last 10 years, so it's truly entertainment watching them barter this.

I don't think your average teacher knows just how severe this recession is, and the financial realities of state and local governments. I bet for many of them, this is how the game has played since they joined the union and this is how it will keep playing.

Personally, if I were in a public union, I'd be doing my best to tip-toe around without drawing too much attention to myself. I don't think they really "get it" if they are causing a big ruckus like this. Not that that excuses the immorality of the demands they are making, but i do think they are missing a few pieces of the puzzle.

Abolishing public unions once and for all should be a result we need to accomplish if we want to make some forward societal progress.

Excellent post, KD. I agree 100%, there are too many people willing to work in this country to placate these goons who feel they're entitled... These unions *may* have had a place at one time, but now it's just organized extortion against the employer/state.

Everyone should have the right to speak out, and even the right to organize to make a point, I'm all for that, but there's no reason that they should still have a job when they decide they're not going to work without a contract with terms they deem acceptable. Don't want to work for what the employers offering, find a new employer.

Nobody else in the free world can go to their employer and say I'm not working until you give me X, oh and I'll stab anyone you hire to replace me if you don't give in to my demands. Why do we let these union goons do it?

Madison — Law enforcement officers are searching for Democratic senators boycotting a Senate vote on Gov. Scott Walker's budget-repair plan Thursday in an attempt to bring the lawmakers to the floor to allow Republicans to act on the bill.

As Republicans denounced the move, one Democratic senator said that he believed most of the members of his caucus are in another state. However, an aide said that at least one, Sen. Chris Larson (D-Milwaukee), was still in his Capitol office listening to constituents.

4,666 getting the Axe in Bloomberg's budget being release today. How will the teacher's union respond in NY?

Quote:
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, escalating his battle with Albany over cuts to city programs, will announce plans to lay off nearly 4,700 teachers as part of a bleak budget to be released on Thursday.

Mr. Bloomberg will portray the reductions as necessary to make up for a loss of $2.1 billion in state aid. But his austere forecast will also serve a political purpose, given the mayor’s desire to wring more money out of the Legislature and to abolish a law that protects veteran teachers.

The mayor, according to a preview of his budget released on Wednesday, will threaten to eliminate 6,166 teaching positions in total: 4,666 through layoffs and 1,500 through attrition. That would reduce the 75,000-person teaching force by about 8 percent, and it would be the first time the city has laid off significant numbers of teachers since the 1970s. From what I have read about the situation in Wisconsin I could not side with the protestors. But I do like the fact that people are unified in filling the streets for a cause. I only hope it gets contagious and sprouts up in some of the places needed like the steps of the Federal Reserve. I admire ones willingness to put livelihoods on the line for a cause even if I dont agree with them.

PS: Want to understand the real threat to the government in Egypt - and anywhere else? It's not violence. Violence is revolution - the armed sort. No, the real power resides in the fact that the people can always go on a general strike and refuse to return to work. There's not a damn thing any government can do about that, and it soon starts causing exponential damage if you can get any meaningful percentage of the population to participate. The fact is this: The people always have the power, no matter what any government asserts or claims, and refusing to work is lawful.

Law enforcement officials are looking for at least one Democratic senator to bring in for a quorum required for a fiscal measure, but River Hills Republican Senator Alberta Darling claimed to Newsradio 620 WTMJ that all the Democrats got on one bus and left the state.
