Now THAT Is A Warrantless Search!

DHS has to be salivating over this development:

At a recent presentation for investors, Microsoft said the ability to see into consumer's living rooms means advertising opportunities. Kinect's cameras can be used to identify people, or objects. Then share shopper's preferences with advertisers. Brett Gordon teaches Marketing at Columbia University.

Like a bong?  A gun?  A person on a wanted list?

My-oh-my, Microsoft, of course, says that this will not be shared without permission.

Uh huh.  And only the people who you give permission to will be able to see inside your living room, right?

Well, not quite.

See, unknown to many people is the fact that there are back doors in most central routing equipment used by Internet companies these days.  These back doors allow the government to duplicate and redirect streams of data wherever they want and they generate no logs when used.

How hard would it be to pick off the fact that a particular data stream was from a Kinect and, oh, "borrow" it via such a copy?  Answer: It is trivial given the infrastructure that exists right now in the core of The Internet.

Camera + network = potential spying device.

Camera + Internet Connection + other than an explicit act by the user to turn on said camera and capture an image in each and every case?

Instant and permanent destruction of any hint of privacy you think you have.

The most-mundane possibilities are bad enough - do you want an advertiser to see your daughter in her underwear playing a video game when she thinks she's doing so alone?

It only gets worse - much worse - from there.

Anyone with half a brain cell knows that the acceptance of the terms and conditions of using Microsoft applications will grant de facto legal permission to use, reproduce, and sell all data collected, WHILE indemnifying Microsoft from any lawsuits filed by guests who did not give consent/permission.

This is very 1984.

1984? Please, this is exponentially worse than anything Orwell ever thought up.

However, knowing how a lot of people use Webcams these days, I would guess advertisers of sex-related products will be busy.....

I have 3 webcams in my office. One is unplugged and in a pile of junk behind my TV and computer. The other two are built into my monitors and have electrical tape covering them. I almost didn't get the monitors because it had them built in, but they were $150 cheaper than the next price point with the same resolution (23", 2048x resolution.)

Since the NSA has said, on the record, that it helped develop back doors in Microsoft's Windows 7, this should be no surprise.

I don't have the software installed to activate the ones in my monitors and only one is plugged into USB (I use the hub built into the side of the monitor for convenience), but they got taped over the day I set them up and will stay that way. :)

I just take a black Sharpie or masking tape like you have done and cover up the webcams that come in every laptop display now. My Android phone (Samsung Intercept) even has a second camera that looks at my face.

I agree, 4,000 pixels wide is amazing, that's what I have too (3,840 actually). It really spoils you.

It isn't just cameras but microphones too.
And just to remind you nearly all cell phones have both cameras and microphones.

Thoreau, I was just thinking about the microphones - I know a man who used to bet some setting screwed up on his bluetooth or something and his Skype friends were hearing him in walking about his house some evenings when everything was supposed to be off.

Link?

As far as I can tell, this was a *rumor* started when NSA said they helped Microsoft develop their security model, and Microsoft has specifically denied that there is any backdoor.

FYI: Many Trojans now contain code to control your computer, including your webcam...
