Living Simply Is Now Illegal

Really.

Thompson faces eviction from his 38 acres in Madison County. The county lawyer tells 24-Hour News 8 it's because Thompson is breaking too many rules, laws and ordinances; Thompson has no water, no sewer and no electricity in his recreational trailer that he calls home.

So?

It's against the law to live simply?  The Amish have no electrical service - by choice.  You can tell an Amish home in the areas where they're common by the lack of an electrical service wire coming into the house.

Never mind that the picture in the article shows a clear window AC unit. It is reasonable to presume he has a generator of some sort.

No running water?  Well, ok, that's a pain in the butt.  But man lived with cisterns for a good long time.  And presuming he has some money (and it appears he's not lacking clothes) he could be drinking bottled water.  This much is certain - he's still alive, so he has a water source.

No sewer?  That's damn inconvenient.  Nonetheless, 38 acres will more than support one man in this regard.  A hole in the ground may not be great, but it works.

First the liberals whine about how we're all living "unsustainably", but then when someone lives in an utterly sustainable matter, refusing to buy and consume $100 or more a month in "services" they do not want, the jack-booted government comes in and demands they get out.

I'm sure that on that 38 acres there are more deer and other wildlife that whizzes and craps a larger volume (by far) than one man.  There's no public safety issue here - this is one man, on his own property, with no evidence that he's polluting anything around him, who simply wants to be left alone - and who clearly isn't interested in "improving" his land and thus paying ten times as much in property taxes and "mandatory" services.

That's really the rub here, isn't it?  The county wants to evict him not due to any sort of danger, but rather because he refuses to build a big fat McMansion on that land and then suck down the kilowatts and pay for every gallon of water twice - one to deliver it, again to cart it away even if he chooses to do things with the water that don't require those gallons to be carted away.

Show me where this individual is actually harming the public's safety and I'll agree with the jackboot of government coming in to tell him how he has to live.

Until then the government has no right to get involved.

At all.

Actually this is nothing new. I looked at getting a few acres of property in southern New Hampshire a few years ago just to set up a small "camp ground" for myself. Not happenin'. If you want to even try to do this you stand a much better chance of doing so on unincorporated land. Even then you really need to fly under the radar. It's all about zoning / tax revenue.

I'm trying to go galt. Only thing stopping me is the fact I can't sell the house. It must be a really bad market or so I heard ;)

I'm not going to let anything else stop me. I'll still have to pay my government rent (property taxes) but beyond that, they will have to come kill me before I give up my newly found "freedom". Only thing I have going is my new "home" is so remote hopefully it's forsaken enough, at least for a while. All I want is to be left alone...I guess that's just asking too much?

Say you have 1000 slaves working hard to deliver your bounty. One goes off on his own and just sits there. You can't allow that. One, your not getting your piece of his hard earned labor and two, what if the other slaves got the same idea?

The usual method of enforcing the correction is that the other slaves would get all worked up: "He's wierd", "He's an oddball, let's get 'im". That doesn't seem to be working anymore.

More than anything I think this was a land grab by the county. His property right on the main road going into Alexandria. Its still bull****, but I think if he were in a more remote area he would have not been hassled as much.

I think the problem is, the land is 'unimproved' as it sits and he still gets to live on it. The 'unimproved' label of course means he pays extremely minimal property 'rent/tax' to live there. If someone were to build a house and add electric/water/sewer services, it would quadruple the value they could TAX.

Very important note I read about this guy a week or so ago:

One of the biggest reasons he is living simply is because he DOES NOT take 'his share' of social security.

I will try to find the link to the article, I think it was in the Indy star or some other localish paper a week or so ago.

@Natew - wow, I hadn't heard that...so there's possibly the other side of the problem. They have absolutely NOTHING to hold over this guy. He's living without the government in any form and they're*****ed.

Winston, exactly the same thought occurred to me. Why can't he claim he's Amish? Why hasn't his attorney thought of that?

Why would you claim something you're not just to keep the government from trampling on your rights? He's HUMAN...that's enough...

This is a foremost example of what is essentially my biggest bitch ... TPTB have rigged the system so that it is well-nigh impossible to live a decent life apart from the dominant culture unless one is considers living under a bridge & eating out of dumpsters a "decent life."
