Ugly Haircuts = Jailable Offense

Yes, really.

In "sweeps" on Aug. 21 and Sept. 17 targeting at least nine shops, deputies arrested 37 people — the majority charged with "barbering without a license," a misdemeanor that state records show only three other people have been jailed in Florida in the past 10 years.

The operations were conducted without warrants, under the authority of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation inspectors, who can enter salons at will. Deputies said they found evidence of illegal activity, including guns, drugs and gambling. However, records show that during the two sweeps, and a smaller one in October, just three people were charged with anything other than a licensing violation.

That's because the government lied.

You heard it folks - it's worthy of armed raid and arrest to possibly provide someone with an ugly haircut because you don't have a barbering license.

Really.  Our government wastes money on this sort of crap.

The government, of course, claims that this was about drugs.  Yeah, ok.

From the final exam of Tyranny 101:

Question: What do you do when you've kicked in a door without a warrant hoping to find drugs and only find a pair of clippers and clumps of hair?

Answer: You charge for barbering without a license to justify what you did was right.

This is beyond pathetic, but I suppose that the MAFIA government needs to get its share of the action in a licensing fee. I was under the impression that the license or act of registration granted government jurisdiction and that without those, the government lacks the proper subject matter jurisdiction as is necessary to bring a case of action in a so called "Court of Law." But please don't allow a minor thing like subject matter jurisdiction get in between some branch/level of the government and its money that it is so generous to borrow you to use to make money for it.

Un ****ing believable.

Except that it's becoming so common as to beggar the question: Why are we putting up with this ****?

Just like mandatory seat-belt laws...
First, they said they wouldn't pull you over just for "that".
Then they migrated to the "it's for the children" meme, and started pulling people over specifically because they didn't see a seatbelt.
In reality, it gives them an excuse for a fishing expedition to see what else they can nail you for and up their quotas and stoke the county coffers.

There are so many laws that we are ALL criminals anymore. If one thing won't stick, then something else will. They just need to get the camel's nose under the tent somehow to start poking around and find it...

(Sidenote: I wonder what would happen if I didn't install seatbelts in my project car... it didn't come with them in 1961, after all. The plan is to put in typical shoulder harnesses, but if I just did a lap-belt, I wonder how many times I would get pulled over even though I was wearing one?)

They're trying to make home salons illegal here in Nashville...it's 'unregulated' and that's a huge problem aparently.

Phantomace, I've got a 1976 F-250 truck that I use to haul tractors on. It did not come with shoulder belts from the factory, nor does it have a place to install them. I'm just WAITING for a cop to pull me over for not wearing a seat belt so I can show him it didn't have shoulder belts in the beginning :)

Your FDA has also tried its best so that a housewife who grows her own herbs organically and capsulates them and sells them as herbal supplement is prohibitied from doing so.

I forget what show I was watching, but they showed how easy it is to make the capsuls yourself and sell them on the internet. The drum roll. This is where I was supposed to say, BAD, VERY BAD, people will die!

I was like wicked! This is how you start a small business. I would much rather buy organic supplements than some of the crap at my drug store. It is unreal how brainwashed people can get and how regulations need to always be present to protect you from your own stupidity. Instead they just protect the big boys from competition. If I sell you bad herbs, you can always sue me... just like the doctor.

Clippy: it looks like you are trying to earn a living without a license!

(Sorry, cheap joke from the MS Office character.)

I can't believe the length out country goes to harass "nobodies" who work hard but don't have the right "paperwork license" for their mundane jobs. A barber is not a brain surgeon. I've gotten pretty good handling clippers myself, just practicing on my long-haired Lhasa Apso, lol

A license is permission from the government to do something.

You should ask why the government has the authority to forbid you from getting married, installing a toilet, brewing beer, driving your car, selling houses or any of a few hundred other activities without their permission in the first place.

You're fixing your neighbor's dentures at a tenth the cost and even a heavily biased news article can't find one unhappy customer?

You're also a felon if you're doing this in Florida without your government papers. It's a good thing this dangerous man was threatened with death unless he allowed himself to be locked in a cage!

I bet you this was just black barber shops.

Everyone has seen a barbeshop movie, we know what goes on there. No need to do a real investigation and cut into donut time.

"Well, it was not one barber shop, it was a lot of them... its a big barbershop synidicate sir. Buba was sitting at his desk and we was like, you know.. I know where them **** keep those drugs, we can take the drugs, and than we can take the shop. So we hit them good, one barber had baggie of coke in his pocket, and vail of perscription drugs!"

It's sad, these cops can't get their hands around this financial mess, but they sure know black and white.

It's just love, they boys in blue are just reminding us that they can kick down a peasents door at any instance, don't make yourself comforatable, and don't be putting away the good china.

You're assuming that they're giving bad haircuts. As pointed out, the only issue is whether they've been given permission from the gubbmint to cut hair.

1/4 of the pilots in Alaska have never held a license. Doesn't mean they're bad pilots.

Now THIS deserves a thread by itself:

Good thing the citizens of Florida can rest easy, knowing that there won't be any more seedy barbering activity to taint their jurisdiction. Not to mention the true victims of the crime, the ones that are now walking around in legal jeopardy with their proscribed "doo". I mean, it's bad enough that Florida allows full-contact strip clubs, and is THE host state for all forms of spring break debauchery, but my soul is chilled to the bone by the idea of an unlicensed person snipping locks on those most vulnerable in our society!!

This was the first time I have read the Slantinel in years and the first story I read. Proceeded to throw the newspaper out. A ****ing SWAT team to shut down a barber shop? Come on. More of the same jack booted thuggery that is the Orlando Police Department. Jail them first, ask questions later, and whatever you do, dont be caught being black at the wrong place and time.

+1 to Antone. We now know where the cops are indeed.

This is not rule of law. This is a hierarchy of tapeworms. Parasites living off productive members of society. The parasites survive only as long as the productive produce.

I love how all these modern-day guilds create barriers to entry. Barber license, really? C'mon. I wouldn't be surprised to find out that some rival barber filed an anonymous complaint.

A few years after I finished grad school I started taking night classes so I could sit for the CPA exam. I dropped out after discovering that in Louisiana CPA's are required to apprentice for two years after they pass the exam before they can claim the certification. Barriers to entry.
