It's interesting to read accounts by Guderian, Speer, etc of this period - a tiresome, continual series of professional, realistic evaluations of the situation with unshirking, realistic prognoses of what (dwindling) measures were still possible and what diminishing outcomes were still possible. After a certain point, Speer started sending all his reports to Hitler starting with the phrase "The war is lost." Hitler responded by locking every report in his safe, unread. (curiously passive and terrified, as opposed to sending the man to a firing squad for reporting the truth...) Years of pleading to FACE things so that something could be saved... in a situation in which those at the top couldn't face reality and had a total lock on policy. When they asked Von Rundstedt "What should we do?" he replied, "Make peace, you FOOLS." Germany still had plenty of knowledgeable, professional people available, to whom it was obvious, even early on, that Germany needed to take its lumps and the longer it delayed the worse it would be. But as Runsdtelt ended up saying "The only troops I have the authority to move are these two guards outside my office." A sober evaluation of the situation and the possibilities are apparently neither requested nor desired.
