How To Respond To Brokers

If you're active in the markets (as I am) you probably get these "cold calls" from time to time pushing this stock or that, and claiming that the caller is "great" at making good market calls.

On the surface these might even sound ok.  The latest one I got was from a  pushing Vodaphone (NYSE: VOD) and claiming that they had called the rise (which, incidentally, they kinda did - they cold-called me a few months ago well off the bottom and recommended it - around $23.)

Looks good, right?  Nice breakout.

Well, not so fast.

See, I get a lot of these "Cold Calls."  The last "infamous" one was a guy who was pumping Rite-Aid (NYSE: RAD) which he claimed was "a lock" to go to $5.  How'd he do?

If I remember correctly, I got the call on that one right around $1.75 on the same premise a breakout after "consolidation", so that would have been a really ugly loss.

Here's how these "boiler room" shops work folks.

The "analysts" and "brokers" will come up with a list of stocks.  Who cares how.  They then call you and recommend one, and mark it in their "tickler" file.

If the stock goes down they'll call you with a different one and hope you don't remember them and their firm's name (which might change the next time you hear from them too!)  But if it goes up, they call and tell you "look how good we are - now stroke us a check to manage some money for you."

See the scam here?  Only the winning bets get reported and accounted for.

I caught the ******* who pulled this crap on me with Rite-Aid a few months back and reamed him a new one.  He was pumping something else at the time and didn't mention his blown call (of course), but I log my phone calls and index them electronically, so his name popped up on my screen.  Oops for him.  When I got done with him he needed a jar of this for his O-ring:

Vaseline by genesis

Nowdays most of these clowns try to hit my cell, which is an even worse idea for them, since I have call barring.  Once I have your number (or if you try to call with it blocked) you don't go to voicemail, you just get dropped unceremoniously on the floor, and since you can't reach me to "talk about it", you'll never get off the "jackass" list either.

Here's the bottom line folks: If you insist on believing that these guys actually have a decent record, you need to ask them to prove it.  To do that demand that they fax you, on corporate letterhead and signed by a corporate officer, all recommendations made by their firm over the last 12 months with the exact dates of each recommendation and a verified statement that the list provided is true and complete.

They won't give you that, as if they do so and tell the truth you will be able to immediately verify exactly what they're doing (which is what I described above) - and if they lie they just opened themselves up to a monstrous lawsuit.

Short form: Every one of these firms should be hung up on immediately, but if you want to make their life difficult, lead 'em on a bit and then tell 'em that you need to answer the door and will be right back.  Then put the phone down and leave it unattended for 15 minutes or until they give up and hang up.

That way they won't be able to cold-call someone else.

I got one of these calls years ago, and I politely declined. A few days go by and they call back wanting to know when I will pay for the purchase.

smiley

I explained I never gave them any information, and in fact told them no. Their response, "Now that the price dropped, you are playing games"?

Then they threatened legal action and some SEC nonsense. I told them to put the President of the company on the phone. Well long story short, a 3 way call with just a manager was initiated. You could tell the broker was worried. I told them to play back the tape (since they claim the call was recorded) and if I in fact said I would buy the stock then I would pay.

I never heard back from them. This happens a lot I bet.

Heh. I just keep one of those portable air-horns handy. Sudden-onset tinnitus makes cold calling a real bitch.

According to Motley Fool, VOD is one of the few telecom stocks still trading below book value. That's not a recommendation by me to buy, of course.

Yeah, just be as annoying as possible. That's the only way to get rid of these persistent cold callers.

Yeah...when I first began trading I interviewed at a bunch of shops before settling into trading for myself. They all said the same thing. Pick 100 people...split them in half. Call all of them and tell one half the stock was going higher and the other half it was a short. Don;t ask them to buy.....just tell them to watch. 1 month later call the half that you were right with. Remind them of the call you made. Now give those 50 people your new schtick...a new stock. 25 were told to buy it and the other 25 to short it. Now you would 25 people that you were right twice with. The next time you called.....they begged you for advice and they were hooked..... So glad I never went in for that.

I think my favorite is the life insurance salesman who, after a six-hour continuing education course, fancies himself as a financial advisor. Though, in a perverse way, I find it amusing to hear their explanation why I should pay them a 5% load for a mutual fund while I can get an ETF for a fraction of the fees.

It always adds to the fun when the ****er, once he realizes that he won't get far with me, want to "Speak to my husband about these important financial matters that obviously I don't understand."

Well eexxxcccuuuseee me while I just finish baking these cookies and give my hubby a bj.

Any broker who cold calls with a stock pitch isn't worth listening to, as basic standards require a knowledge of a level of suitability of investment - if someone doesn't know your basics, any stock pitch is blind, IMO. You might not should be buying stocks at all, who knows?

That said, I built my entire business cold calling, and plan to start again. Too many folks paying too much for what, IMO. A birthday card?

To me, it's all about starting a conversation; if there's no connection, it's see ya in about 2 minutes. But, you'd be surprised how many people really want to talk, given an opportunity to do so.

My philosophy is to try to always leave someone better off for having had a conversation with me. What they choose to do with that ... well, that's to be determined. No question in my mind than that y'all could do much worse not listening to my advice, lol.

N/not investment advice, for that ya gotta pay me!
