Good God: Revisions To Chart (Ponzi Ponzi Ponzi!)

The revisions to GDP published this morning have turned to disgustingly nasty one of my favorite charts.  Specifically, this one:

You've all seen this a dozen times.  Well, here's what it looks like with the revised GDP numbers "corrected" in the Excel file:

"Holy Sheeit" doesn't even begin to describe this.

These are not small changes, but they also mark the desperation of our government to avoid recognition of even a tiny, 2% annualized decrease in GDP!

That's right folks - "as-reported", the maximum y/o/y "depression" that garnered the title "Great Recession" was a minuscule 2% decrease in REPORTED nominal GDP.

But look at the policy response.  Oh, and that last dot - it's estimated, based on the 2Q preliminary GDP numbers (which are almost-certainly too "hot" and the debt numbers (almost-certainly too "cold".)

In addition the revisions make clear that there was in fact a zero real growth rate in 2006!  There was your warning.... and likely why we had the nice little dump in the market starting in the early part of 2007.

(Revisions only go back to the e/o/y 2006 numbers.)

If you look to the 2003-2007 period for a clue as to how our government will respond, you're in for a stunner - there will be no material decrease in deficits while economic "recovery" on a nominal scale will be unlikely to go beyond 4% on a reported basis.

At this rate we're gonna be Greece - and sooner than you think.

Ponzi Ponzi Ponzi!

That is truly ugly, but your extrapolated 1/31/11 figure will certainly give fuel to the "V" shaped recovery camp.

At least until the next set of revisions. smiley

No. The top is the original, the bottom with revisions.

Rule, make sure you look at the numbers, and not just the lines. First time I glanced at the charts quickly it seemed the top was better than the bottom. Till you realize things like the drop extends further in the bottom chart, nominal for 2010 was negative, instead of just flat. And the 'estimated' V shape will easily disappear going forward as better estimates come around and more revisions finally reflect reality.

Abnromal, yes and no. The Z1, yes. But we only get that quarterly.

Took me a moment to understand the charts... I too thought they were backwards at first. Might be more clear if you used the same scale for both.

It also might be helpful to have the estimated numbers in a different color. I agree with Spank ... gives an appearance of a V-shaped recovery that is actually happening.

Agree with Go and Sledge - the charts don't immediately support the narrative. Most people aren't going to get it, but interpret it the way Go just said.

The pumpers are right - it's a V-shaped recovery smiley You're giving them fuel for the fire.

What'll be interesting is seeing the revisions. It makes very clear that absent the stimulus 800B, the growth would probably have continued negative.

Can the government be sued for securities fraud, for selling US Treasury bonds on the basis of false statements concerning GDP?

You know Karl's old saying..."if you or I did that, we'd be in handcuffs".

BTW, doesn't the low GDP growth implied by these revisions also suggest that interest rates were set far too high in those years? I don't know about you, but I certainly saw no inflation from 2000-present, and a Fed Funds rate = 4% certainly made no sense at the time.

So according to the second chart, nominal GDP and Actual GDP are sharply up and the federal deficit is leveling off?

That seems like it would be good thing.

I just checked with Larry Kudlow and Dennis Kneale. It is indeed a "V" shaped recovery and they are both pleased to see that Karl has finally come around to their way of thinking. smiley

I don't know what the big deal is guys... Look, we live in a new age where pesky things like reality and mathematics just no longer apply.

Just like the new-age scientists tweaked and made up data to prove beyond a shadow-of-a-doubt that we are all dead meat if we don't stop driving SUV's, today's new-age economists tweak and make up data to show that everything is getting better!!!!

It's the age of VALUE-ADDED Data! Embrace it and stop yer bitchin! ;)

"Leveling off" at at double digit deficits relative to GDP and real GDP "sharply up" at -12% annualized are NOT good.

Perhaps my sarcasm meter is broken?

Should this be y/o/y or am I missing something?

It will be interesting to see where those final dots really end up in time, and where the dots that come after it end up. Sheesh!

Arkon - e/o/y = End of Year, I believe.

As for "those final dots" - I would say to lop 30% - 40% off them, and recalculate....

Then twist the cork out of that bottle of 100 year old scotch you have been saving.....and down it with a buddy. No sense in saving it for the ZOMBIES....
