Maybe you don't demand answers out of people who may say too much in front of the cameras. Stuff you don't want brought up. Dangerous that.

Congress is really really good at holding pompous dog-n-pony hearings about trivial matters like steroids. Give them a truly important matter and they show their true worthless selves.

Spot-on, Bagbalm. Congress, and certainly the Administration, is not at all interested in getting too much information out into the hands of the great unwashed. Might have a negative impact on The Narrative.

I don't know as to how much there is we don't know about the failure at the Deepwater Horizon. The petro industry engineers surmised what the problems were almost immediately and it all looks like a shoddy construction job done by a penny pinching, irresponsible company.
What maybe the problem is that we also have as a co-party to this disaster the Obama Administration. No matter how you try and spin it this well belongs to them too. The permits to drill it were issued by them, the regulation of and oversight of the drilling was their responsibility as were the slap dash approvals of modifications to that drilling permit.
Yesterday, the Biloxi Sun Herald featured two articles on the spill as it moves ashore there. The first showed two small ( I'm talking 25 foot open boats) skimming oil in the Mississippi Sound. The second featured Rep. Gene Taylor ( a Democrat btw) just trashing the Obama Administrations inability to organize any response.
We are over two months into this and yesterday there was no spotter aircraft directing the few boats out skimming. The response, such as it is, it totally disorganized and desultory. In the immediate aftermath of Katrina, the Bush Administration came under severe criticism for its disaster response. It may not have been entirely justified as Katrina itself had damaged the roads and other infrastructure necessary to mount a response yet within two weeks Bush fired his FEMA director and brought in that no nonsense 'let's not get stuck on stupid' General Honore to get things moving and he did. Nothing against the Coast Guard and Admirals Allen and Landry but they have never managed large scale operations of the sort that are required here. General Honore as a former armored division commander had and thus logistics and kicking ass were not new to him.
Where is our General ( or Admiral) Honore today? We could have had thousands of civilian boat owners, and pilots for that matter, getting trained and equipped to act as coast auxillary defense force ready to pounce on any oil anywhere coming ashore along the whole Gulf coast by this time. Why no large deck Navy ship or Air Force Awacs type aircraft in the region to act as a overall command and control platform? This is really a military operation. BP is an oil company. It has neither the authority or personel trained to conduct an operation like this. Neither does the Interior Department. Lets get with the program here for God's sake.

Isn't this guy retiring? Good ridance.
Now, hopefully the people of his district will have an honorable person to elect to replace him.

I hate to break it to ALL of You, but:
There is NO Legitimate Leadership. -Not for the Things that REALLY NEED Doing.
Generals?
The Generals are too busy overseeing the Grand Malfeasances of Iraq and Afghanistan. Don't worry; only a few Trillion Dollars are missing out of the Generals' Black Box of 'Peace Dividends', but the New US Super Embassy/Disney Resort Projects in Iraq and Afghanistan will eventually be completed even if way over budget and 10 more years into the Not-An-Occupations...
There is NO Honesty.
Not from .Gov, not from the Globalist Corporations Executives and Paid Shills, not from the Politicians seeking an angle to exploit in a tragedy, not from the Captured Regulators or the Captured Media.
I'm NOT a Part of, nor a Party to -this Circus of Greed & Doom -thus I have NO Reason to Lie to You about it. So, Surprise! -I'm not going to.
Hold onto Your dipsticks,'cause You Aren't Going to Like This -and, well; You shouldn't...
You are ALL Going to HAVE to Accept that YOU ARE Being Lied to and are Going to Be Lied To; -by Everyone Involved, at Every Opportunity, ALL the Time, Without Fail, that IS How IT IS.
You see, NO ONE has a Vested Interest in Being HONEST with Anyone about Anything that has to do with this situation whatsoever. Seriously; Who would want to rush in an accept Responsibility for the Largest Ecological and Second Largest Financial Disaster of New Millennium? No One wants to OWN this Feral PIG on a Rampage. -Get that through Your Heads.
There is NO Money.
Ordinary People have none. -I mean NONE.
What? YOU have some Money -right NOW? Well, You must be One of the Only Ones that isn't a Criminal Working for Wall St. or Running an Afghan Protection Racket. ( Good for You; just DON'T Let Anyone know You DO Have Some Money or You won't have it for long... ) Almost Everyone that isn't involved in one of those Two, er, 'Professions' is ****ing BROKE and collecting Food Stamps and Extended Unemployment or waiting for a Pink Slip or an Eviction/Foreclosure Notice or for the Car to get Repo'd or the CCard Declined...
Does BP have Money? Sure, but the .Gov Politicians and Regulators are in Their back pocket ( that's how We ended up in this situation in the first place ) and They aren't going to***** off One of Their Best Corporate Bribery Conduits Campaign Funding Sources to please the Penniless Powerless Plebes of Podunk.
Does the Government have Money?
NO. They are already Borrowing BILLIONS of Dollars A MONTH to prosecute Their Wars ( No, that's not the term, uh... ) Police Actions ( Sigh. ) Narco & Petro State Consolidation Campaigns ( ****, that is as accurate as I can get? This whole thing is SOOOO Damn Lame... ) and to provide Bonus Money to the Bankers and Stock Hawkers and the Bloated Public Unions. So, there is NO Government Money.
Not unless China ponies up.
But, YOU have to go buy a truck load of worthless Chinese **** from Wallmart for that to be even a remote possibility.
My advice would be Camping supplies if You happen to live on the Gulf Coast as You might just find out real soon that You are going to be spending the Summer in Yosemite or such whether You planned on it or not...
For Everyone Else in America: Ammunition makes sense.
Oh, -& Canned Fish.
The Very Last Can may be worth a small fortune...

If I were Obama I would what Johnson did. I would announce my intention not to seek re-election NOW and let the Democrats come up with someone who knows what the hell they are doing.
There is no excuse for not forcing these people to testify except to conceal Congress' complicity in the affair. And that is not an excuse - just a reason.
The real investigation should be the government's response to the crisis. That is where we will find out helpful information. BP did the typical corporate, "manage the bottom line" thing but the government response has been little short of stupid and might possibly be criminal collusion.
I am not a big fan of Bush's Katrina response. Leaving all those people in the N.O. Dome for 2 weeks was the worst thing I have ever seen in terms of disaster response. This is a close second.

With all those excess reserves the banks can start buying T's - expanding their balance sheets that way. Excess reserves are just over 1T so the banks all alone could fund the federal deficit for 6 years. The feds borrow and spend the people they give the money to put it in banks and everybody stays fed. There is something wrong with this picture, but it worked for them in GDI after a fashion. here is the link to excess reserves: http://research.stlouisfed.org/fred2/ser....

The Katrina response mess has several causes. The primary one was that due to a law already on the books, the Federal government was constrained in its abiliy to respond. They were forced to wait for the states affected to request help. This is something the states didn't do right away, because the governor of Louisianna was a moron. So the feds had to sit on their hands for a while, then because the public thinks that the feds are in charge of everything, they (or more likely the Media which hated Bush with a passion) blamed the president first.

When do Laws bother the Federal Government? When Did Bush and Cheney toe the line where the 'Laws' were concerned?

Are these rig/platform workers US citizens? WTF is supposedly in the way of normal subpoena power? Big piles of money?
That's the problem with corruption. As soon as it becomes clear there is not now nor will there be any prosecution, everybody wants in.
