Oh this is too much... (Apple iPhone OS Update)

The new operating system will have several of the functions clamored by developers and users. Most significantly, Jobs said iPhone 4.0 will allow non-Apple apps to perform multitasking, or the ability to keep an application running in the background.

Cool, right?  Uh, not so fast:

However, he added that multitasking will not be available for the iPhone 3G or the second generation of the iPod touch.

Feel that nice Jobs-sized weenie going in yet, those of you who were dumb enough to buy the i-Feminine-Product - or the current model iPhone?

But when it comes to consumer hostility, this takes the cake:

In addition, Jobs gave a preview of iAd -- a new service that the company hopes will improve the ability of app developers to integrate ads onto the device. The service will allow for ads within apps and will keep users in those apps even when they click on an advertisement.

Welcome to iSPAM!

Just say "NO" to this sort of crap folks.  You pay for an application and a device, and now crApple wants the developers to force-feed you advertising for which they will be paid?

Disclosure: No positions.

KD,

I think you might be over-reacting a little bit. 99% of Apps that have advertisements in them are free to begin with. This is just an easier way of embedding those advertisements. I have developed an app myself so I can see why the developers were asking for it. It just like Pandora or any other 'free' that makes you watch advertisements. If you pay those app versions don't come with advertisements.

Its a good way for a developer to make some revenue if they get widespread adoption.

Luke: Like hell.

Embedding advertising spam into applications is as hostile as it gets.

And barring multitasking on the 3g iPhones and the 3G-enabled iDouches is being done at the carriers demand - to keep people from sucking on the bandwidth, which AT&T can't handle.

So you get ****ed as a consequence of Jobs giving you the big gay one, and yet you think it's all ok.

I'll say this - the iPhone had a nice interface - arguably best of class - until the HD2 showed up. Side-by-side in terms of capabilities between the 3GS and HD2 though they're not even in the same league - the HD2 blows the iPhraud away in every category, from music player to video player to screen clarity to performance level, and it multitasks everything.

Jackl,

You are technically right in that Apple sells stuff that is not something super, but what they are REALLY REALLY REALLY good at making stuff intuitive and easy to use.

Somebody tell me exactly HOW this is any more anti consumer than Cable? How about movies at the theatre? Both of which you PAY FOR and STILL are FORCED to watch advertisements.

This is nothing new...Apple is just doing what others have been doing for decades. Why all the hub bub now? You missed your chance to influence the system 20 years ago with cable...too late now...

Beside, the iphone is not the best OS on the market anymore. I'd rather have an android phone any day, however the ipod touch is nice.

Either way...IMHO, ALL smart phones are a 100% total waste of money for most people. I just downgraded my crappy cell phone plan to pay as you go cuz I never use it. Thats $1000's people spend to be "connected" 100% of their life...I will continue to pass, be more content with life and have more $ in my pocket because of it....

Aarrrghhh, I'm getting squicked. Farking Apple. This iPhone in my pocket will be my first and last Apple purchase.

I don't think it will affect me that much (I think) as I'll stay with this current version of the iPhone for another 1.5 or two years and then get a non-Apple phone. As long as they don't quit writing apps for this version of the iPhone, I should be OK.

A cracked iphone is perfectly capable of running applications in the background. both the 3G and 3GS are currently capable of doing this if cracked.

What am I missing, what's the big deal?

If an application developer wants to sell advertising let them. The user isn't forced to use the software, if you don't want an app with ads don't download an app with ads. Android already does this. There's at least one application on my phone that is only free because it's supported by advertising. Previously it cost a few bucks.

Is there something heinous I'm missing, like Apple selling ads on the phone's software itself so you're forced to see them just to use the phone?

My answer to the iPhone:

inline

Not exclusive to one carrier, better processor (snapdragon 1ghz), ****loads of RAM, SDHC storage so you can swap cards, swappable battery (carry a spare if you want), 3G + tethering internally supported, capacitative (multi-touch) glass screen and unbelievable screen resolution and clarity. Inherently multitasks everything since the OS is built for it, and if you don't like the OS build that came with it you can flash on a different one - including one you customized. Oh, it's a phone too.

BTW that's the first WM phone that I find to be basically "no compromises". The TP2 was nice but this thing is unbelievable. IMHO blows android and iFraud out of the water - clear out - it's not even a fair fight.

I actually love the apps on the iPhone. It's true, I'm hopelessly addicted to staying connected to teh interwebs 100% of the time. I have apps that literally run my house and show me what is going on there any time I want. I get notifications if anything seems to be wrong there. I also can control my servers that I rent on the internet. I couldn't really do all that with my last smartphone that ran Windows Mobile 5 and 6, at least not nearly as easily.

Huh? There's no particular skillz in doing that from the current WM devices. Indeed, I read and post on here from my HD2 all the time.

Years ago, I worked for Radio Shack. At the time, we were selling computers with 20Mb hard drives. I remember when we started selling computers with (MASSIVE!) 40Mb hard drives, more RAM and slightly faster procs.

I witnessed a number of customers come in and complain and ask for a refund for their months-old computers. Commonly, we heard, "The computers you're selling now can do so much more than the one you sold me X time ago!"

We would ask them, "Does the computer you bought still do everything it did when you bought it? When [ insert carmaker ] brings out a new model with greater horsepower and more features, do you expect them to provide a refund or exchange for your older model?"

This is virtually the same thing happening here except that some of the more recent older models can actually be retrofitted to use the extra power and new features without any action required of the owner.

I don't understand the angst.

If people want to choose a free app that has embedded ads, why stop them? How is this "as hostile as it gets"?

Apple's modus operandi (for better or worse) is to control the user experience. They may just be preventing multi-tasking on the pre-3GS devices because they feel it is too slow, just as they did not offer video recording enhancements to the 3G. I'm not so sure this can be blamed on AT&T.

(disclosure: I currently use a jailbroken iPhone 3GS with T-Mobile and plan to make the switch to Android as the platform improves)

btw, I'll tell you the thing that REALLY*****ed me off: I paid $130 to break my contract early (was going out of the country for two months, so it made sense to do so), but AT&T will still NEVER unlock the phone. Apparently legal in the US (not in EU), but it SUCKS.

I'll have to check out that HD2, thanks for showing it. The HTC that I was using for several years (this is ancient history by now) was an HTC 6700 running Windows Mobile 5 and 6. That is ancient functionality compared to today's devices.
