AIG, Paulson and Geithner

These hearings are simply amazing.

First, Tim Geithner.  Timmy made a lot of noise about "total meltdown" risk (and indeed even referenced the possible loss of civil order!) but the question that was not asked is this: Who stoked that fear in Congress?  That would be Bernanke and Paulson, right?  They in fact told Congress "either hand over $700 billion for buying troubled assets or tanks will be in the streets."

But then - on top of that - they didn't do what they said they needed the money for and there were no tanks!

So we're stuck with a handful of facts, none of which are in dispute:

  1. Congress was told that either $700 billion be handed out immediately or civil order would be lost.  They were told this by Bernanke and Paulson and believed it.

  2. Congress took the action Paulson and Bernanke demanded but then did not spend the money as they said they would, and yet the "or else" did not happen.

  3. Yet neither Paulson or Geithner will take responsibility for the precise actions taken during what they, along with Bernanke, claimed was literally an "end of the world" event!

Paulson gets the cake though - he admitted (under oath!) that The Fed just blatantly printed the money to rescue AIG and the banks (!!!)

So let's see - it wasn't his decision, it wasn't Timmy's decision, and yet at the very same time the entire world was about to come to an end unless the Congress immediately handed over $700 billion of taxpayer money?

Oh, and let's keep going.  Paulson got skewered with what I pointed out in August of last year - that is, that he knew full well he wasn't going to buy any "toxic assets" prior to the final vote being taken in The House but notified nobody in Congress of this fact.

Then Mr. Baxter's turn comes and he says that Geithner signed off on paying AIG counterparties at par.

Didn't Timmy claim he had no part in the negotiations with AIG and the determination of what to pay?  I thought he did..... maybe I misheard, but I seem to remember that he has continually maintained that he had no part in the decision process and in fact recused himself......

Oh wait - here it is!

I had no role in making decisions regarding what to disclose about the specific financial terms of Maiden Lane II and Maiden Lane III, and payments to AIGs counterparties.

Uhhhhhhh Turbotax Timmy?  How do you explain that?

My biggest fear is that Washington is so captured, so entrenched in the status quo that Paulson, Bernanke, and Geithner could admit to everything people have accused them of, and not only will they not be indicted, they will keep their jobs!

I've been using the #pitchforks hash tag for all of my tweets around this type of topic, and hope that you and your readers will start to do the same. Let them see some virtual pitchforks. I've called my congress critters, to no avail (though Merkley, my Senator, opposes BB).

#pitchforks!

Geithner is a psycopath. That is the only explanation.

He lied to Congress when he claimed that he first learned of the AIG bonuses from his staff in March 2009. It was all over the internet in late 2008.

He lied when he said as the head pf the NYFRB that he was not a regulator. The NYFRB's website clearly contradicts his statement.

Vote out anyone who voted for TARP.

Vote out anyone who voted to confirm Geithner.

Vote out anyone who votes to re-appoint Bernanke.

When in doubt, vote out the incumbent.

He definitely recused himself....but did not sign anything (Kaptur got that in the record). the time line becomes very important. I am on information overload such that some Reps have leapfrogged me...that's embarrassing. We almost need one person on each of the malfeasers/malfeasances so we can stay current. Wonder if Timmy is parsing "what to disclose" although I'm pretty sure I've heard him say he's had nothing to do with anything re AIG negotiations.

Ben, he said in WRITTEN TESTIMONY he had nothing to do with it.

But Baxter said he signed off on it.

Oops.

Rutben - I think the key is the timing. The deal was done on the 11th (?) and he recused self 24th(?) or similar dates. Nobody pinned Timmy down on what he knew/what instructions he gave etc. during that time period between

No one is taking responsiblity for anything. Somewhere, someone must have some document that reveals the truth. Unfortunately, he/she probably now works for GS and participated in the 2009 bonus.

Timmy's grasp on the truth is only exceeded by his skill in regulating banks. Obama is too afraid of looking bad to fire him, so do the country a favor Mr. Geithner, resign. Oh yeah, get your buddy Ben to join you. This lying, cheating, and stealing is clearly stressing you both out. Heck, let big Paul show you how to catch Atlantic salmon on the fly - its frustrating but at the end of the day, nobody wants to see you lynched. If you hang around, it won't get any easier for you, particularly after the crash.

Hello all, first post, long time reader.

Karl, I don't know how you could write that much on these hearings. I watched the entire thing and I am so mad I can hardly type this. I had hope, maybe that was my mistake. After watching that debacle, I can't see anything getting better. It's 7 degrees outside, I think I'll go out there for a while.

Carry on all.

Yeah, and I loved how quickly he went from "we print it" to "well, yeah, it's the taxpayers' money". I guess he realized that was preferable to a discussion of what he had just said.

re. MMMF redemption, and bearing in mind the possibility of FDIC-supervised bank holidays, here's my question:

What's next? Are they going to authorize the suspension of redemptions of USPS money orders?

There are not, after all, too many avenues remaining for someone who wishes to remain in physical cash, but wants to be able to settle bills with organizations that are not local to him.

I wonder... is there any precedent as to whether failure of checking and electronic settlement mechanisms is considered an acceptable excuse for a loan default? I feel like at some point I may be like Jesse Duke, trying to make a mortgage payment which nobody will accept, except that my servicing organization is clear across the country from me, not just down the road in the same county.

Granted, if this comes to pass then there will be more things to worry about, but still... I do wonder what might be deemed to trigger "act of God" type clauses and what might not. I guess I need to go read my mortgage again.

And I smiled when you started advocating that the control and supply of money should be returned to Congress, although that dumb **** Marty Cej kept speaking over top of you. Bell is a fan, no question!

Paulson lied to Jim Gorden's question about bait and switch of $700B bailout. He said he changed his mind after Congress voted. Jim Gorden pointed out that according to the book by David Weasel, he changed his mind before Congress voted. So he perjured again today on the same point Karl noted before(Aug. 31).
Somehow Paulson did not have more time for the testimony on Capitol hill today.
