Obama: Enough Of This Crap

This is FOUR people who you've appointed that can't pay their damn taxes, including your Treasury Secretary?

The latest is that Daschle has withdrawn, of course.

CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN?

I'll tell you what would be change.  Since it appears that a huge percentage of the current and former Congressional delegation has cheated on its taxes - after all, what are the odds you only picked the tax cheats, if you want me to believe in your idea of CHANGE you will immediately order all member of Congress in both Houses to undergo full IRS audits all the way back to the Statute of Limitations (three years), along with all of their staff.

You and I know know it won't happen, but I'll tell you what - I keep hearing people say they're going to file absolute crap this year.  Utter garbage.  "The Dog ate my Schedule C."

If The American People do this, Mr. President, government funding will collapse.  The IRS can't possibly audit everyone and we all know it.

Your administration is dangerously close to creating a full-on tax revolt among Americans.  You would not believe how often I have heard this among people both online and off in the last couple of weeks.  The anger, especially when the people who are cheating are folks like Daschle and Geithner, is VISCERAL - these are the people who both wrote the tax code and were involved in the bailouts and handouts which you expect we the people - ordinary Americans - to pay for.

Here is what Daschle said previously:

"Make no mistake, tax cheaters cheat us all, and the IRS should enforce our laws to the letter. " Sen. Tom Daschle, Congressional Record, May 7, 1998, p. S4507.

But you, Mr. President, expect Americans to file truthful tax returns and pay their taxes as due?

I file and pay every year exactly what I owe.  No cheating, no games, no BS.  I spend upwards of a full week preparing and checking my tax return to make sure that I pay every dollar that is due (but not one more!)  But now we discover that every day another one of your appointees in your "new day" for Washington DC has cheated on their taxes and in the case of Daschle and Geithner they knew they owed the money and didn't pay until you tapped them?

Against this backdrop you expect ordinary Americans to file and pay for bankster bailouts to cover the fraudulent actions of the banking and securitization industry?

You might want to rethink this one, and I can come up with only two ways to do it:

  • Audit EVERY Congressperson and EVERY staffer in your administration, including yourself.  Everyone, all the way back to the statute of limitations, with the results of those audits made public.
  • Ditch the IRS and the current tax system entirely (mooting the question) and move the nation to The Fair Tax, thereby firing all the tax lobbyists and game-players in DC and elsewhere.

Frankly I prefer #2 but #1 is acceptable.

"Do nothing", on the other hand, may well NOT be accepted by The American people.

If what I hear in my day-to-day the patience of "The People" is about done.

You are on fire the past few days.

Great work.

Two weeks into the new administration, and the only change we've seen so far is the rather lackluster background checks done on the nominees. Sad.

Even if #2 were to be followed, it should not negate #1.

#1 was the law of the land during the time period in question. Violators of previous laws are not retroactively let off the hook if the law going forward changes.

IRS employees themselves are subject to serious scrutiny, but the guys that actually create tax code and thus arm said employees are not... hmmm.

One possible suggestion: Might want to put #1 and #2 for the numerically challenged, in front of the points instead of bullets.

I mean if they can't figure out their taxes....

Companies should be subject to this too. My plan would be to either abolish company tax or levy it at a standard international rate. The pigs to pay it where they have their head offices. No exceptions. No scams.

Yeah, this is definitely veering into dangerous territory. Our tax system is an honor-based system. No way they can audit everyone. As we speak, the Feds are looking at borrowing trillions over the next couple of years. No way anyone's going to loan us that money if the American people's willingness to be "good for it" starts to come into question.

The interviews I've been hearing of Senators about the Daschle withdrawal are telling. Every one I've heard interviewed has expressed shock and dismay at Daschle's action, indicating that the hearing went so well yesterday that Daschle was pretty much a shoe-in.

5% folks...5%...

If 1/20 of the IRS returns were either fraudulent or lacking, there is no possible way the IRS could plug that hole. They rely on the honor of the American taxpayer and intimidation. If 5% said "Up yours, Joboo" to the IRS, there would be nothing they could do to stop it.

80 million returns...
If 4 million photocopied their ass onto their 1040, the IRS would have to prosecute 16,000 every business day before the next year's 4 million sat on the Assjet 2000.

How many man hours would go into a single prosecution? How many forensic accountants? Interviews? Requests for information? Judges? Juries? etc? They only have 110K IRS agents to begin with, and not all of them are directly in enforcement (some are functionaries that sort mail, answer phones, and tap at computers all day).

5%...

The IRS cries "uncle" long before 5%.

I'm hearing plenty of what chief bottlewasher mentioned. Times are tough, people are picking up all sorts of part time and 1099 jobs on the weekends. Isn't one of the things you can deduct job search expenses? How about expenses while a 1099 employee? The tax gap is going to be the tax GAPE this year. Deficit 2T is looking increasingly likely.

as for "4" appointees, I haven't been keeping score.

You don't need to file crap. Can't you just file and say you can't pay? Sure, they'll lien on you, but the effect is the same: The government is deprived of money from taxes.

The reason Congress won't initiate audits of all the members are twofold

1) They all have cheated.

2) The tax code is so complicated you might not be able to tell if you have a skeleton in your closet.

Either way it's just another example of government gone wild passing laws that are too complicated, and just basically out of sync with reality.

Another reason only total reset will fix us.

Let's see....I'm self employed. For the last 16 years we have lived in a manner to allow us to put the max. amount into our ret. plan (wife works with me). To date, we have lost over half of it.

Now, I am being asked to fund these bailouts etc....

A number of our folks pay us cash...which will be nice to have should things fall apart. Maybe we will change our quarterly payment amount to reflect the downturn in the economy...smiley

President Barack Obama is mulling a controversial new tax program that would require members of his Cabinet to pay taxes owed under the Federal tax code, the White House confirmed today.

While the unorthodox tax proposal is reportedly "only in the planning stages," it is being eyed as a possible way to balance the Federal budget.

"According to projections, if members of the Cabinet actually paid their taxes, we could wind up with a budget surplus in excess of $18.2 billion," said Obama economic adviser Paul Volcker.

Mr. Volcker said he strongly favored the plan, but added, "Fortunately for me, I'm not officially in the Cabinet."

But imposing taxes on Cabinet members may be easier said than done, critics of the plan warn.

"Remember, these people are not used to paying taxes," said one White House source. "They are going to be hopping mad about this."

Another wrinkle in the plan is how the taxes would actually be collected, with President Obama reportedly favoring a cash-at-the-door entry fee for every Cabinet meeting.

"If they don't have the money, they don't get in," said the source. "They're not going to be able to just sail into the White House for free like the Jonas Brothers."

When told of Mr. Obama's plan to make his Cabinet members pay taxes, Fmr. Sen. Tom Daschle responded, "Whew! Sounds like I dodged a bullet."

The less services the government is trying to provide, the less of an issue taxation of the citizenry becomes. Just think about it, if you work 40 years, close to 20 years you are working to support the government which looks for ways to waste your money. Half your life you are supporting bull**** programs, genocide in Iraq and whatnot, people should refuse to pay taxes and companies should 'move' to Cayman Islands to send a strong and crystal clear message!
